Holding a UK visa, how do you apply for NIN and how long does it take to get it?

JustiScript•2 November 2026•👁️ 37

I've just arrived in the UK, and while filling out a form, I ran into yet another abbreviation. Just trying to make sense of all these numbers is a headache in itself.

The NIN referred to here stands for the National Insurance Number, also officially abbreviated as NINO, which is used to record an individual's tax and National Insurance contributions. I believe that adults already residing in the UK, who have the right to work and are currently job hunting, should begin the application process while looking for work, without needing to wait until they receive a job offer.

An application portal is available right from the job search stage.

The UK government application guidelines specify that you are eligible to apply if you reside in the UK, have the right to work, and are in one of three statuses: working, seeking employment, or having received a job offer.

Before starting the application, you can first log in to your UKVI account to check eVisa and confirm whether your number is already displayed. Some individuals are already assigned a number during visa processing. Those who have previously worked in the UK can also check old payslips, P60 forms, or letters from HMRC. This number is valid for life; you do not need to reapply if you change your visa, change jobs, or update your personal details. If you already have a number but cannot locate it, you should follow the procedure to trace your number. Only after confirming that you do not have a number should you check your eligibility for a new application. Those who have not yet travelled to the UK must wait until they are in the country before applying.

Hold the passport in your hand and take a photo of the pages.

The entry point is the UK government's National Insurance number application page. Select "How to apply", then click "Apply". Have your passport ready, then complete the form in the order shown on the page.

The application will involve identity verification. The officially accepted documents include passports from any country, as well as national identity cards from EU countries, Norway, Liechtenstein, or Switzerland. Chinese passports fall under the passport category, so there is no need to obtain a European ID card. Follow the on-screen instructions to take and upload a photo of yourself holding your passport, along with photos of any other required identity documents; specific photo requirements are as stated on the current form, and you may ask someone to help take the pictures. You may still apply without the aforementioned documents, but you might be required to undergo in-person verification. Applicants unable to upload photos may still proceed with the online application, but may subsequently be required to attend an appointment or mail copies of their documents, resulting in a longer processing time; specific arrangements will be detailed in a follow-up email after submission.

Four weeks, to be counted starting after identity verification.

Upon submission, you will receive a confirmation email containing a reference number used to track this application. It serves a different purpose than the official NIN and cannot be used to fill in the National Insurance number field in the payroll information.

This step is easy to overlook: the "After you apply" section of the UK government application guide states that it can take up to 4 weeks to receive your number after verifying your identity. This timeframe is calculated from the completion of identity verification ; for those still waiting for an appointment, providing additional photos, or mailing copies, the wait time cannot be calculated solely from the day the submit button was pressed. I recommend keeping your submission date, requests for supplementary documents, and identity verification completion records together, and checking your confirmation email for any pending tasks.

If it has been more than 4 weeks since you submitted your application, or if you have moved or your personal details have changed during this period, please contact the Application Helpline and have your reference number ready. The official website lists the relevant channels based on your area of residence.

The number hasn't been issued yet; how should onboarding be arranged?

The UK Government has explicitly stated that individuals who can prove their right to work in the UK may commence employment before receiving NIN. However, the specific role must still comply with the conditions of their immigration permission, and the employer's right to work check must be completed. NIN alone cannot serve as proof of the right to work, nor does it expand the scope of permitted employment. When preparing to onboard, you may inform Human Resources that the number is currently being applied for and provide your right to work documentation as usual; once the number is issued, you should then forward it to the payroll department.

There are also specific procedures for payroll reporting. HMRC's "Payroll Reporting Information" specifies: if the employee number is unknown, leave this field blank and provide the employee's address.

When filling out onboarding forms and encountering mandatory fields, you can have the payroll staff handle the pending application status; do not use the application receipt number merely to fill in the blanks. Your name, date of birth, and address must match your official records; this information helps ensure that payroll filings are accurately matched to you. Once you receive your official number, update your records promptly and keep the notification, as you will be able to use it again when you change jobs in the future.

The next steps in the application process are typically outlined in the confirmation email. Once you have submitted the required materials as instructed, you can also continue to move forward with your job search while waiting for your number.
