What to do if a UK bank account is frozen? 31-day period and appeal steps
The supermarket cashier can't process the payment. When I get home and open the App, the balance is still there, but transfers, deductions, and cash withdrawals are all rejected. Calling customer service, they just repeat "Your account is under review, and we cannot provide more information." This isn't a system failure - your account has been frozen, and the bank is legally not allowed to tell you the reason .
Why is the customer service refusing to tell the reason for freezing the UK bank account?
Once a bank suspects that funds are involved in money laundering, it must submit a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) to the National Crime Agency (NCA). Section 333A of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 criminalizes "tipping off" - if a teller tells you "we have reported the SAR," he himself will be held criminally responsible.
So the customer service's silence is not indifference. The several points that most Chinese people often trigger are very specific: large amounts of money transferred from relatives in China for property purchase, helping others "exchange currency" through WeChat groups, small businesses that collect payments on behalf of others, sudden deposits that do not match your income, or just expired passports/BRP without updating KYC documents. The last one actually accounts for a considerable proportion, and it can be resolved by submitting some additional documents.
There are four types of account freezes, lasting from a few days to two years (it is recommended to take screenshots for reference)
| Type | Based on | Duration | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal Review KYC Expired |
Bank Compliance | Several Days to Several Weeks | Resubmit Documents Fastest Freeze Release |
| has been reported SAR and NCA agreed |
POCA s335 |
7 working days notice period |
prepare funds source documents |
| freezing observation period moratorium |
POCA s336/336A |
31 days, the court may extend for another +186 days |
If no extension is made must disburse |
| Account Freeze Order AFO |
POCA s303Z1 |
Up to 2 years (Account ≥ £1000) |
Must hire a lawyer to the Magistrates' Court |
Distinguish these two matters: the first three are banking actions, and complaints should be submitted to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS); the fourth one, AFO, is a court order, which FOS cannot handle, and you can only apply to the magistrates' court to cancel or vary it.
Discover that the bank card is frozen, do these 4 things within the first 72 hours
First, immediately open an account at another bank. Don't wait for the freeze to be lifted. If direct debit for rent, salary from employer, and utility payments fail consecutively, the fines and damage to credit record will be harder to fix than the freeze itself. Notify your employer's HR and landlord to change the receiving account as soon as the account is opened.
Second, submit a written complaint, don't just call. Use the complaint form within the App or write a letter, clearly requesting "a final response letter". Leaving a written record is the ticket to escalate to FOS later.
Third, now organize the proof of fund sources into a PDF. Pay slips, employment contracts, house selling contracts, stock settlement slips, parents' gift letter (stating "gift, no repayment required") + the other party's bank transaction records, and money transfer receipts. Once the bank asks, the results are completely different between someone who can provide them within 48 hours and someone who delays for two weeks.
Fourth, don't make small moves. Don't try to transfer the remaining quota in batches, don't close the account, don't let friends use another account of yours for transactions. These actions will be directly marked as circumvention in the compliance system, which may escalate a routine review into a formal investigation.
Bank is delaying resolution? File a FOS complaint after 8 weeks, full free of charge
Complaints related to payments, banks should generally respond within 15 working days, and in complex cases up to 35 working days. Once receives the final response, or if the complaint remains unresolved after 8 weeks, you can refer the case to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Three deadlines you must remember: FOS is free; you must submit within 6 months from receiving the final response, otherwise it is generally not accepted; the incident itself usually needs to be reported within 6 years or 3 years after you become aware of it. The FOS has the right to determine that the bank handled it improperly and to award you compensation for actual losses and mental distress - late fees, fees caused by bounced checks, interest on temporary loans, can all be included in the claim list.
If you are unsure about which category you fall into or how to organize the materials, you can pay £5 at justiscript.com for a response from a qualified English lawyer within 24 hours, in either Chinese or English, which is more reliable than asking around in a group.
Starting from April 28, 2026, banks must notify customers 90 days in advance before closing an account.
After freezing, sometimes it leads to de-banking. The good news is that the rules have become stricter this year: according to the Payment Services Contract Termination Amendment Regulations passed in 2025 and effective on April 28, 2026, 2026YY4月28日, for new account contracts signed after that day, banks must give at least 90 days' notice before terminating the account for individual consumers and micro-enterprises; contracts signed before that date still apply to the original two-month notice period. At the same time, banks must provide a written explanation for the reason of closing the account - disclosure is not allowed unless it involves financial crime information.
This is especially critical for visa holders: the financial proof for spouse visas, and the continuous rent and utility bill records required for permanent residency applications, may be interrupted by an unexpected account closure. During the freeze period, keep all receipts of rent and utility payments made through other methods in a separate folder; this can save a lot of explanation costs when providing supplementary evidence later.

It's a possibly unpleasant judgment: most account freezes turn into big troubles not because the person is really at fault, but because initially spent the first two weeks arguing on customer service calls, leaving no written records, and failing to prepare the documents of fund sources in advance . You can't control the freeze, but whether you can smoothly transfer to FOS after 8 weeks is entirely up to you.
The above four-category freeze comparison table is worth saving and checking slowly. If you have a friend who is currently "under review" by the bank and just received a large transfer from within the country, showing this table to him would be more helpful than ten comforting words. 🗂️
Also want to ask everyone: Have you or your friends ever encountered a freeze? What triggered it — domestic transfer, collection on delivery, or just expired KYC documents? How many days did it take to unfreeze? Please share in the comments section. The more samples, the more useful it is for others.
This account breaks down one practical rule used in daily life in the UK every day - the residency period and days out of the country, visa document list, remedial period after rejection, and bank and rights protection operations like today's, keep following GOV.UK for updates.
