What to do if a UK bank account is frozen? 31-day period and appeal steps

JustiScript

The supermarket cashier can't process the payment. When I got home and opened the app, the balance was still there, but transfers, deductions, and cash withdrawals were all rejected. I called customer service, and they just repeated one sentence: "Your account is under review, and we cannot provide more information." This isn't a system failure - your account has been frozen, and the bank is legally not allowed to tell you the reason .

Why is the customer service refusing to tell the reason for freezing the UK bank account?

Once a bank suspects that funds are involved in money laundering, it must submit a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) to the National Crime Agency (NCA). Under section 333A of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, "tipping off" is itself a criminal offense - if a teller tells you "we have reported the SAR," he himself would be criminally liable.

So the customer service's silence is not dismissive. The several specific points that Chinese people often trigger are: large amounts of money transferred from relatives in China for property purchase, helping others "exchange currency" in WeChat groups, small businesses that collect payments on behalf of others, sudden deposits that do not match your income, or simply expired passport/BRP and not updating KYC documents. The last one actually accounts for a considerable proportion, and it can be resolved by submitting some additional documents.

There are four types of account freezes, lasting from a few days to two years (it is recommended to take screenshots for reference).

Type Based on Duration What to do
Internal Review
KYC Expired
Bank Compliance Several Days to Several Weeks Resubmit Documents
Fastest Freeze Removal

Up to 2 years

Distinguish these two matters: the first three are banking actions, and complaints should be submitted to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS); the fourth one, AFO, is a court order, which FOS cannot handle, and can only be appealed or amended at the magistrates' court.

Discover that the bank card is frozen, do these 4 things in the first 72 hours

First, immediately open an account at another bank. Don't wait for the freeze to be lifted. If direct debit for rent, salary from employer, and utility payments fail consecutively, the fines and damage to credit record will be harder to recover than the freeze itself. As soon as the account is opened, inform the employer's HR department and the landlord to change the receiving account.

Second, written complaints, don't just call. Use the complaint form within the App or write a letter, clearly requesting "a final response letter". Leaving a written record is the ticket to escalate to FOS later.

Third, now organize the proof of fund sources into a PDF. Pay slips, employment contracts, house sale contracts, stock settlement statements, parents' gift letter (stating "gift, no repayment required") + the other party's bank transaction records, money transfer receipts. The results of someone who can provide them within 48 hours and someone who delays for two weeks are completely different.

Fourth, don't make any small moves. Don't try to transfer the remaining quota in batches, don't close the account, don't let friends use another account of yours for transactions. These actions will be directly flagged as circumvention in the compliance system, which may escalate a routine review into a formal investigation.

Bank is delaying the solution? Appeal to FOS after 8 weeks, full free service

Complaints related to payments, banks are generally required to respond within 15 working days, and in complex cases, up to 35 working days. If you receive the final response (final response), or if the complaint remains unresolved after 8 weeks, you can refer the case to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Three deadlines you must remember: FOS is free; within 6 months from receiving the final response, it must be submitted, otherwise it is generally not accepted; the incident itself usually needs to be reported within 6 years, or within 3 years after you became aware of it. The FOS has the right to determine that the bank handled it improperly and to award you compensation for actual losses and mental distress - late fees, fees caused by bounced checks, interest on temporary loans, can all be included in the claim list.

Starting from April 28, 2026, banks must notify customers 90 days in advance before closing an account.

After freezing, sometimes it will lead to de-banking. The good news is that the rules have been tightened this year: according to the Payment Services Contract Termination Amendment Regulations passed in 2025 and effective on April 28, 2026, for new account contracts signed after that date, banks must give at least 90 days' notice before termination; contracts signed before that date still apply to the original 2-month notice period. At the same time, banks must provide written reasons for de-banking - unless involving financial crime information, it shall not be disclosed.

This is especially critical for visa holders: the financial proof for spouse visas, and the continuous rent and utility bill records required for permanent residency applications, may be disrupted by an unexpected account closure. During the freeze period, keep all receipts of rent and utility payments made through other methods in a separate folder; this can save a lot of explanation costs when providing supplementary documents later.

It's probably not a pleasant judgment: most account freezes turn into big troubles not because the person actually has problems, but because spent the first two weeks arguing with customer service by phone, without leaving any written records, and without preparing the documents of fund sources in advance . You can't control the freeze, but whether you can smoothly transfer to FOS after 8 weeks is entirely up to you.

The above four-category freezing comparison table is worth saving and checking slowly. If you have a friend who is currently "under review" by the bank and just received a large remittance from within the country, show this table to him. It will be more helpful than ten comforting words. 🗂️

Also want to ask everyone: Have you or your friends ever encountered a freeze? What triggered it — domestic transfer, collection on delivery, or just expired KYC documents? How many days did it take to unfreeze? Please share in the comments; the more samples, the more useful it is for others.

This account dissects one practical rule used in daily life in the UK every day - the required period for permanent residency and days out of the country, list of visa documents, remedial period after rejection, and bank and rights protection operations like today's, keep following GOV.UK for updates.
