Are overseas qualifications not recognized in the UK? UK ENIC/NARIC certification guide: £210 a piece of paper to save your visa and permanent residence application
Last month, reader Amy sent me a request for help: She completed her undergraduate degree in China and taught all courses in English. When she applied for a Skilled Worker visa, she confidently uploaded her degree certificate and transcripts. However, she was stunned by a rejection letter from Home Office - "You have not provided evidence that your qualification meets the English language requirement." The visa fee for was £719 and IHS was £1,035, all in vain.
Amy’s experience is not unique. From 6 April 2016, all applicants applying for a UK visa or permanent residence (ILR) with overseas qualifications must provide UK ENIC certification - a document officially proving that your degree is equivalent to UK undergraduate/master/doctoral standards. Without this piece of paper, no matter how strong your academic qualifications are or how fluent your English is, Home Office may directly refuse the visa.
In today’s article, we break down the ins and outs, application steps, fee details, and fatal misunderstandings of UK ENIC (formerly UK NARIC) certification to help you avoid detours and waste money.
1. What is UK ENIC/NARIC? Why are visas and permanent residence inseparable from it?
UK ENIC is the officially designated overseas academic qualifications certification body in the UK. It is responsible for assessing the equivalence between international academic qualifications and British degree standards (undergraduate/master/doctoral), and confirming whether the academic qualification can meet the English language requirements for British visas when the conditions are met. Simply put, its function is to "translate" your overseas academic qualifications into a grade label recognized by the UK.
UK NARIC changed its name to UK ENIC, but the service remains unchanged.
On March 1, 2021, UK NARIC officially changed its name to UK ENIC. The reason is that after Brexit, the UK will no longer use the EU-specific "NARIC" title and switch to the broader European certification network name "ENIC". But don't worry, the name change won't affect service content or assessment quality - search for "UK NARIC" or "UK ENIC" and you'll find the same official service, run by Ecctis on behalf of the UK government.
Which scenarios must be certified with UK ENIC?
In the following cases, your overseas academic qualifications must be certified by UK ENIC before they can be accepted by Home Office:
- Skilled Worker visa : Ecctis will give you a code confirming that your academic qualifications are equivalent to a British undergraduate degree or higher, and are taught in English.
- permanent residence (ILR) application for : If your degree taught in English meets the language requirements, it must be officially recognized by UK ENIC.
- PhD Tradeable Points: : When applying for Skilled Worker, if your PhD is obtained overseas, you must be confirmed by Ecctis to meet British PhD standards in order to enjoy salary discounts or bonus points.
- Naturalization (British Citizenship) : Some applicants use academic qualifications to prove their English proficiency and also require ENIC certification.
💡 Note : Although Canada is generally regarded as an English-speaking country, it is not recognized by Home Office as a "majority English-speaking country" when it comes to academic qualification certification. Canadian academic qualifications also require ENIC certification.
2. How to apply for UK ENIC certification? Complete process in 5 steps
The application process for UK ENIC is completed online on the Ecctis official website. Here are the detailed steps:
Step 1: Register an account
Visit www.enic.org.uk or qls.ecctis.com (dedicated visa channel) to register an account or log in with an existing account. The same account can be used to submit applications, upload documents, pay fees, and track progress.
Step 2: Choose the right type of service
UK ENIC provides a variety of services. If you choose the wrong type of , the certification will not be used for visa application . Choose according to your needs:
- Visas and Nationality – English Proficiency: Prove that your degree is equivalent to a British degree + taught in English to B1/B2 level, cost £210 + VAT, applicable to most visa and permanent residence applications.
- PhD Verification: Confirmation that the PhD is equivalent to UK PhD standards, cost £210 + VAT, bonus points for Skilled Worker PhD.
- Statement of Comparability (regular version): Cost £49.50 + VAT, only used for job search, admission, and professional registration. cannot be used for visa application .
⚠️ Fatal Pit #1: Many people apply for the £49.50 regular version in order to save money, but are rejected by Home Office. Visa applications do not accept the ordinary Statement of Comparability as proof of English proficiency, and must use the "Visas and Nationality" service.
Step 3: Prepare and upload materials
The materials required depend on the type of service, but usually require proof of academic qualifications and language instruction. Core files include:
- degree certificate (Degree Certificate): clear scan or high-definition photo.
- transcript (Academic Transcript): full version, showing all courses and grades.
- Certificate of English Teaching (Medium of Instruction Letter): An official letter issued by the school confirming that your course will be taught entirely in English. The letter must be on school letterhead, signed by an official, and include address and contact information.
- translation (if applicable): If the document is not in English, a certified translation is required. Optional UK ENIC’s Translation Waiver Service (additional £49.20) or a professional translation agency (such as Dialexy).
⚠️ Fatal pit #2: UK ENIC may contact your school directly to verify the authenticity of your academic qualifications. If the school contact information is incorrect or unable to respond, the application will be rejected and no refund will be given. Before applying, be sure to confirm that the school information is accurate and the school email/phone number is available.
Step 4: Pay the fee
Cost summary (May 2026 data):
- Visa-specific certification (English Proficiency): £210 + VAT = approximately £252
- Statement of Comparability: £49.50 + VAT = approximately £59.40
- Translation Waiver: £49.20
- Postage cost: e-Statement £7.50 / UK first class mail £4 / Express post £15 / International express delivery negotiable
Fees are non-refundable once UK ENIC has commenced an audit, even if certification conditions are ultimately not met.
Step 5: Wait for results
Standard processing time is approximately 15 working days, upon completion you will receive the certification document electronically (by mail) and in hard copy (by mail). Ecctis will only start the evaluation after all materials are complete and pass the inspection. If the materials are incomplete, supplementary submission will be required and the time will be extended.
If you need to rush, you can choose the Fast Track service, but the cost is higher. Please check the official website for the specific price when applying.
3. 3 fatal misunderstandings that cost thousands of people money every year
Myth 1: Degrees from English-speaking countries do not require ENIC certification
is wrong! Even if you obtain a degree in an English-speaking country (except the UK), you must provide a Statement of Comparability to prove that the degree is equivalent to a British degree. Degrees in the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand all require certification, but they are exempt from language tests such as IELTS/PTE.
Myth 2: The old UK NARIC certificate can always be used
The certification documents for UK ENIC and the old UK NARIC themselves have no official validity period, but whether they can be reused depends on the evidence requirements for new applications. UKVI will assess English language and academic evidence strictly by the date of application - if your previous certification only proved "undergraduate equivalent" but now your visa requires "master's equivalent + B2 English", the old certificate cannot be used.
⚠️ Pitfall #3: The old UK NARIC certificate and the current UK ENIC Visas and Nationality certificate are not interchangeable. If you have a UK NARIC certificate before 2021, be sure to confirm whether it meets the current requirements before applying for a new visa, and reapply if necessary.
Misunderstanding 3: With ENIC certification, you will definitely be able to get a visa
UK ENIC does not decide whether a visa or citizenship application is approved, nor does it assess your overall eligibility for a particular immigration route. It simply provides a formal statement for UKVI to assess whether you meet certain evidentiary requirements under the immigration rules. Even if you get the ENIC certification, you still need to meet other conditions such as salary thresholds, CoS, and exit records.
4. Practical advice: When is the best time to apply?
Apply as early as possible, don’t be stuck on time. Although the standard processing time is 15 working days, it may be delayed to 4-6 weeks if the materials are incomplete, the school responds slowly, or during peak review periods (such as the graduation season from June to August each year). It is recommended to prepare in advance at the following times:
- Skilled Worker visa : Apply for ENIC immediately after getting the CoS. Do not wait until the visa is submitted.
- permanent residence (ILR) : Apply for ENIC 2-3 months before the permanent residence application window opens to avoid missing the 28-day application window due to certification delays. Use 永居计算器 APP (https://justiscript.com/ilr) to calculate your permanent residence countdown and plan the certification time in advance.
- student visa to work visa : Apply for ENIC before graduation. After getting the Graduate Visa, you can use it directly when looking for a job and preparing Skilled Worker materials.
If you are not sure whether your academic qualifications meet the certification requirements, or do not know which service type to choose, you can first add our licensed lawyer WeChat uklvshi for consultation to avoid spending money but not getting valid certification.
5. Write at the end: The value of a piece of paper may be your path to permanent residence.
UK ENIC certification seems to be just a piece of paper and costs £210, but it directly determines whether your visa application can be passed and whether the countdown to permanent residence can be started smoothly. Amy finally resubmitted the ENIC certification and reapplied for a visa, but she had already lost £1,700+ and 3 months of time - a cost that was completely avoidable.
3 core points to remember:
- Visa/permanent residence application must be made through the "Visas and Nationality" service, not the regular version which costs £49.50;
- When preparing materials, confirm that the school’s contact information is accurate and ENIC will verify it;
- Apply 2-3 months in advance and don’t get stuck thinking about it during the visa window.
