Is the Life in the UK test result expired? Permanent residency English 2027 to B2
"…provide a valid digital reference number from an educational institution or other person approved for this purpose by the Secretary of State showing they have passed the Life in the UK test."
—— Immigration Rules, Appendix KOL UK (Knowledge of Life in the UK Requirements)
The thing referred to as "the exam phase" in the permanent residency application is exactly the above sentence under the current immigration rules. Thirty or so English words, no mention of passing scores, nor of English language levels. The already rewritten routes for work permits, ten-year permanent residency, and settlement for family and private life all direct the requirement of knowledge of life to this Appendix KOL UK.
There are four phrases in this sentence, each handling a different matter in actual case trials. Looking at them individually is more useful than memorizing the rules.
"Approved" two characters, decide whether the grade counts or not.
The regulation is not about "passing a test on Britain," but rather about scores issued by an institution approved by the Minister of State. In practice, there is only one entry point: the official appointment page on GOV.UK, £50 per attempt, with over 30 test centers across the UK, requiring online booking at least 3 days in advance. The test lasts 45 minutes and consists of 24 questions, with 18 correct answers (75%) required to pass.
The mobile app for practicing questions and various mock exams do not generate any numbers that can be filled into the application form. Additionally, the official "Identification requirements" was updated in June 2026. On the day of the exam, you must bring the document specified in this file for verification. If the documents do not match, you will be denied entry, and the fee will not be refunded.
A string of numbers, that's the score itself
The article requires a digital reference number, not a notice letter, not a certificate photo. After passing, just fill in the unique reference number (URN) obtained, and for earlier year results, use the pass number issued at that time.
Guidance says: Since December 17, 2019, decision makers can directly access the result records through the online verification portal, and this page includes the candidate's photo taken on the day of the exam. In other words, it is not verifying whether the number you copied is correct, but rather whether the record behind the number matches the person who submitted the application. The same "Knowledge of language and life in the UK" assessment guidance (version dated December 18, 2025) also mentions the other half: if there are reports of cheating, or if the applicant's English level appears to be clearly inconsistent with the qualification held, the decision maker may not accept the result, but cannot directly refuse the application. Instead, they must inform in writing the reason for not accepting the result and provide the applicant with an opportunity to retake or take another B1 test. This step is easy to miss - people who receive such letters often think it is a refusal notice, but actually it is a time-limited remedial window.
"Passed" after: Permanent residency and naturalization share this one.
The provision uses the past tense and does not add any time limit. GOV.UK The exam page states this very clearly: those who have already passed do not need to take it again, for example, if someone took the test when applying for settlement, they can use the same result for subsequent naturalization applications.
My judgment is that this exam should be taken as early as possible, without waiting until there are only three months left before the submission. The reasons are threefold -- the score has no expiration date, the exam content itself has not changed in this round, and it is not in the same appendix as the English requirement adjustment in 2027. On the English side, the validity period and recognition conditions are separately regulated, so it is not cost-effective to take a SELT exam several years in advance.
The same set of preparations can be used for two applications, which is a one-time investment in this entire chain.
There is not a single English word in this provision.
Treat "KoLL" as an appendix that used to cover two matters, but it is now inaccurate for the revised routes. The current structure is separate: knowledge life refers to Appendix KOL UK, and English refers to Appendix English Language, each with its own exemptions, which need to be checked separately; only some categories that have not yet been revised remain in Appendix KoLL, which still covers two matters.
| Project | Based on | The current standard |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge Life Exam | Appendix KOL UK | Passing is sufficient, no expiration date |
| English (Settlement) | Appendix English Language | Before March 26, 2027 B1, after B2 |
B2 This change comes from HC 1691 on March 5, 2026. Home Office The current guidance for the Long residence case is: for applications submitted before March 26, 2027, English is B1; for those submitted on or after that date, it is B2, unless there is an exemption. The threshold is determined by the submission date, not the day you meet the qualifying period .
The exemption covers only half, the other half is still required.
GOV.UK There are four categories of exemption from the exam: under 18 years old, 65 years old or older, previously passed, or having a long-term physical or mental condition with a submitted exemption form or medical certificate. For medical exemptions, there are specific requirements for the issuer: it must be filled out by the applicant's own GP or a GP from the same clinic, or a GMC-registered consultant physician, and the doctor must have met the applicant in person and assessed their ability to meet the relevant requirements. A letter sent without an in-person meeting is usually not accepted.
It is easier to deviate on the other side. Those who have a degree taught in English, or are nationals of countries where English is the main language, are exempt from the English requirement; the long-term residency guidelines specify that this exemption applies only to the English part, and applicants still need to meet the knowledge of life requirements. Those with UK degrees or holding passports from the US, Canada, or Australia must still take this exam.
Not sure which appendix or exemption category you fall under, it's safer to pay £5 on justiscript.com for a written response from a qualified English lawyer on this issue, rather than following someone else's approach.
Do the following three things next
1. Book the test through the GOV.UK official page, and check the documents to be brought on the day according to "Identification requirements" before the test.
2. After passing, keep a separate copy of the URN, and note down the passport number and name spelling together, as the same number will be needed when applying for naturalization.
3. Clarify which permanent residency route you are on, Appendix KOL UK or Appendix KoLL, and then decide whether to prepare for English at B1 or B2 level based on whether the submission date falls before or after March 26, 2027.
