eVisa How to deal with it when unable to log in? Practical operation for recovering and correcting UKVI account errors
"my eVisa birth date has a wrong digit, should I reapply for a visa?" No. Nor do you need to go to the visa center, or find someone to handle it for you. The error is in the Home Office record, not the permit itself on your hand. Just take the correct entry and fill out one form to make the change; taking the wrong entry usually costs you two weeks of waiting, and the trip happens right in the middle.
The most troublesome part of the UKVI account is that it bundles three completely different types of issues: "I can't get in," "it has a mistake," and "my situation has changed" into three web entry points that look very similar. Below are the explanations according to the actual symptoms you encounter.
The first thing you shouldn't do when you can't log in is not to register again.
1️⃣ Lost both phone number and email, but the account can still be recovered. This is the most widely spread misunderstanding. Many people think that if they can't receive a verification code, their account is lost, so they register a new one. The official account recovery process is originally designed for people who have lost both contact methods. The entire process does not rely on the original email or phone number. After verification, UKVI will directly replace your login information for you.
2️⃣ Don't open a second account. Duplicate accounts won't copy your identity, but will cause the status records to be inconsistent with the new account. Later, if you want to merge them, it will require a longer manual process. If you have already mistakenly created one, please explain when restoring.
3️⃣ The core information required to submit a recovery request is: detailed information of the ID document you used to register this account (passport, ID card, or old BRP/BRC). If you still have UAN, UKVI customer number, or old BRP number, please fill them in as well. The recovery page of GOV.UK clearly states that the application can be submitted even if these details are incomplete.
4️⃣ Recovery usually takes several business days, and the result will be notified by email. Do not resubmit the same application during this period. Duplicate applications will cause the case to be re-queued.
eVisa The information is wrong, don't fill in the two entries incorrectly.
"Report Error" and "Update Information" are two completely independent services. The only criterion is: was the error caused by Home Office, or has your situation changed.
gov.uk's Report an error with your eVisa only accepts three types of cases: the information was incorrect when you first received the account (such as a wrong name spelling); you can see eVisa but cannot generate a share code; Home Office created the account for you but you have never been able to log in. The fields that can be reported include name, date of birth, gender, nationality, photo, as well as license type, expiration date, and additional conditions.
| Your situation | Which one to take | General feedback |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong name, wrong birthday, wrong visa type or validity display | Error form | Contact you within 10 working days |
| Changed new passport, changed name, changed mobile email address | Update information service | Simple items are immediate, but those requiring review of documents need to wait |
| Can't receive verification code, can't log in at all | Account recovery | A few business days, email notification |
After submitting the error form, you will receive an automatic confirmation, after which you just need to wait. The official statement is that there is no need to call to follow up. Once the error is fixed, they will send an email. Here is something that only someone who has been monitoring this area for a long time would notice: GOV.UK has made a separate transparency data of eVisa error correction volumes, placed under "Online immigration status (eVisa): UKVI account creation data", named "eVisa error correction volumes from the online webform". According to the official explanation, the total number of errors corrected since September 2025 accounts for less than 1% of the existing valid eVisa. How to interpret this percentage can be debated, but it at least indicates one thing - error correction is a routine action, not just your bad luck.
My judgment is straightforward: these two services are free throughout, and do not generate any new visa applications, so it's not worth paying agency fees for them. The money you pay is just for someone else to type on the website for you. The real uncertainty lies in questions like "Is this a mistake or an update?" It's much more cost-effective to spend £5 on justiscript.com to get a written response from a British lawyer within 24 hours than to pay hundreds of pounds to have someone else fill out the form for you.
The section that should be handled on the day of changing the passport
5️⃣ Once you get the new passport, go to update your UKVI account details and replace the document. Don't wait until after you've booked your flight. Your immigration permission is linked to the document number in your account. If it's linked to the old passport, the airline and immigration authorities will not match.
6️⃣ Passport number, name, and date of birth must be entered exactly as they appear on the document. Even a single character difference will result in a new mismatch. Whether there is a middle name or whether there is a space in the pinyin is determined by the document page.
7️⃣ These three items, changing name, birth date, and nationality, require uploading supporting documents: proof of name change or deed poll, marriage certificate, divorce absolute decree, naturalization certificate, etc. Upload the corresponding document for each item. Changing only phone number, email, or address usually takes effect immediately.
8️⃣ Updating your information does not mean reapplying for a visa. It will not change the expiration date of your permit, nor will it change the attached conditions; it simply connects the correct identity information to your existing identity. Seeing that the "Expiration Date" on the page does not change, there is no need to be worried.
9️⃣ Leave some buffer in the schedule: Updating documents that need review doesn't happen instantly. It's much more relaxed to start the account process two or three weeks before departure, rather than finding discrepancies the night before landing.
Screenshot is not proof, share code is.
A widely spread claim is "just taking a screenshot of eVisa page and sending it to your employer or landlord is enough." This is not true. For an employer to have a statutory excuse, they must use the share code you generated plus your date of birth to verify on the official verification page. The page you see and its screenshot are not the prescribed methods of inspection.
There are two details that often trip people up: share codes are generated separately according to their purposes. Those proving work rights start with W, and those proving rental rights start with R; they are not interchangeable, and if the wrong one is given, the other party cannot find the result. Each code is valid for 90 days from the date of generation, and can be reused during this period. After expiration, it needs to be regenerated.
If you can't generate the code at all, it's probably not an operational issue, but rather the status wasn't posted in numeric form, or there's an application still in Home Office's hands without a decision — this situation falls under the error category in the second table above.
GOV.UK The original text on the account recovery page is: "You can still recover your account if you do not have all of this information." (Even if you don't have all this information, you can still apply to recover your account.)
A message to those about to give up: The threshold is lower than you think, submit even if you haven't gathered all the materials, it's better than asking everywhere online.
