Anyone applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship must pass the test, unless exempt. You are exempt if you are under 18, aged 65 or over, or have a long-term physical or mental condition confirmed by a doctor.
You must answer at least 18 of the 24 questions correctly — a pass mark of 75%. You have 45 minutes to complete the test.
There is no limit on the number of attempts. If you fail, you must wait at least 7 days before taking the test again, and you pay the £50 fee each time you book.
All questions are based on the official handbook "Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents" (3rd edition). It covers British values and principles, history, traditions, culture, and the UK government and law.
No. Once you pass, your result never expires. You can use your unique reference number for a later ILR or citizenship application, no matter how much time has passed.
