Can you get five-year settlement status with an annual salary of £50,271? Couples and children must carefully calculate this.
永居计算器 · November 2, UK New Policy Special / 02
First, review the document status: This article interprets the UK government's response to consultation CP 1707, published on November 2, 2026. It identifies a new framework, but implementation still requires detailed immigration rules and operational guidance. The following "new framework" should not be directly treated as an already effective application requirement.
One person receiving a salary increase might start thinking about whether their permanent residency can be advanced. A married couple may worry: if one works and the other takes care of the children, can they both stay together? What happens when the child turns 18 during university studies?
The government's response on November 2nd incorporated these family realities into the new framework. However, the three distinct conditions—the income threshold, the number of years for income documentation, and the residency duration —are being combined, which easily results in pushing back the application date by several years.
01 | First, clearly understand the three amounts
£125,141 per year: 3-year pathway to income acceleration.
£50,271 per year: 5-year pathway to income acceleration. £12,571 per year: Minimum personal financial contribution threshold under the standard pathway, with additional exemptions available.
These are threshold requirements in the response and do not equate to the minimum salary requirements for all visas.
Please pay special attention to the last digit. Today's response states £50,271 and £125,141. If you still forward screenshots using figures from the old consultation document, readers may easily fail to recognize which version you are referring to.
More importantly, the new framework does not solely consider the salary on the application date. The government adopts a "best years" approach, examining a longer time window to identify qualifying years that meet the threshold, thereby allowing room for income fluctuations due to factors such as childcare or illness.
02|Making enough money for one year does not mean you've entered a five-year path
Three-Year Path: meets specific criteria by demonstrating that in three out of the four years prior to application, annual income reached £125,141. The summary table should indicate three years met, or three out of the most recent four years.
Five-Year Route: In the five years prior to application, three years must have earned at least £50,271 per year. This means two years can be below this threshold, but qualifying residence period and other conditions must still be met.
Consider the following hypothetical example solely for illustrative purposes: a person has had an income of £52,000 in three out of the past five years, and two years with income below the threshold due to childcare responsibilities. This aligns with the document's stated idea of "three years meeting the criteria"; however, whether the individual meets the five-year qualifying residence requirement and how income is attributed to a specific year still need to be assessed according to detailed rules.
Conversely, the increase from £40,000 to £52,000 does not mean that each previous year's salary was automatically calculated based on the new rate. Contract annual salary, actual income, tax records, and bonus entitlements cannot be assumed to be entirely identical without proper guidance.
03|The Ten-Year Journey, a Single Original Text Discrepancy That Must Be Mentioned
Regarding the summary paragraph on page 11, it mentions £12,571 annually for at least three years; however, the specific assessment criteria on page , and the summary table on page 42, state that £12,571 must have been achieved for five years within the seven years prior to the application.
We inform readers of the "five out of seven years" arrangement through specific evaluation paragraphs and summary tables, while preserving this textual discrepancy. must not be interpreted as a commitment in the general paragraph that "earning enough for three years will definitely satisfy the ten-year pathway requirement." ultimately depends on how implementation rules and technical guidelines are unified.
This is also why permanent residency planning cannot rely solely on a single online chart showing "three years/five years/ten years." A single number on such a chart often involves income windows, route restrictions, and additional conditions.
04|One works, one takes care of the child: Income consolidation has been arranged
Responding to the requirement, eligible couples or partners may combine their incomes to meet the minimum financial contribution threshold of £25,142 for a household, which is double the individual minimum amount. The total amount can be met by one person alone or jointly by both partners. The relationship must be genuine and ongoing, and only one partner may rely on the other's income.
This is meaningful for the person who reduces their working hours to care for children: not everyone needs to earn £12,571 individually. However, note that the document refers to the combined minimum financial contribution threshold of . It does not follow from this that "two people each earning £26,000 would combine to meet a five-year accelerated eligibility of £50,271."
The partner and the main applicant must both come to the UK at the same time to qualify for settlement simultaneously; a partner who joins later must complete the same qualifying period of residence. The main applicant's qualifying period being sufficient does not automatically mean the later-arriving partner also meets the requirement.
05|A child turning 18 is not the end of all protection
under 18: 's new framework retains the arrangement for joint residence with parents, waiving requirements related to income, government debt, English language proficiency, and the Life in the UK test, but relevant eligibility criteria and criminal record checks still apply.
Aged 18 to 24: Young people who retain dependent family member status may continue to settle with their families without meeting individual income requirements; however, they must still satisfy other mandatory requirements applicable to adults. Pursuing university studies does not automatically replace the assessment of "still maintaining dependent family member status."
Age 25 and above: If the child has already reached this age when the family obtains permanent residency status, respond by requiring the child to independently obtain eligibility or transition to an appropriate individual immigration pathway. Specific applicability and conversion arrangements will depend on detailed regulations.
Family planning requires simultaneously reviewing three timelines: the qualifying period for the main applicant, the partner's own residency duration, and the child's age at the time the family gains eligibility. An accelerated pathway for one individual should not be directly applied to the entire family.
What can be done tonight is to get the accounts ready.
Compile the P60, payslips, and HMRC records for each year; highlight maternity leave, sick leave, or changes in employment; list the visa start dates and birthdays for each family member separately. Do not fabricate salary figures, backdate documents to meet numerical requirements, or treat unpublished income calculation methods as established rules.
