How many pages of ILR bank statements and payslips need to be submitted?
When applying for permanent residency, the bank statement is over a dozen pages long. Can I just submit the single page showing the salary deposit?
Home Office specifies the evidence period and format separately for the work visa and family routes, and the number of pages should be determined according to the specific requirements. My recommendation is to retain the complete bank statements for the required period and prepare a separate reconciliation table for salary deposits; if there are any discrepancies in the amounts, have the employer provide an explanation of the breakdown before submitting the application. Capturing only the line showing the deposit may inadvertently cut off information regarding account ownership and the covered period.
First check the coverage period for ILR materials.
The Work Permit line is in accordance with Section 22.5 of the Work Permit Adjudication Guidelines; the table outlines the general scope of required preparations, while individual requests for additional documents will be handled separately.
| Applicable Scenarios | Payslips and Corresponding Bank Statements | Document Date |
|---|---|---|
| Principal Applicant for Technical Work Visa | covering the most recent month's salary | within 31 days prior to the application |
| Family Spouse Route Category A | 6 months prior to the application | The most recent portion within 28 days prior to the application |
| Family Partner Route Category B | Relevant period of employment in the preceding 12 months | The most recent portion within 28 days prior to the application |
The family route outlined in this table is strictly limited to the five-year spouse Indefinite Leave to Remain route that relies on UK general employment income to meet the Minimum Income Requirement. The Family Migration: Minimum Income Requirement guidance treats Category A and Category B separately: Category A typically requires at least six months of employment with the current employer and meeting the threshold under the methodology for this category; if the applicant has been with their current employer for less than six months, or if the calculation is switched to Category B, the payslips and corresponding bank statements for the relevant employment period within the 12 months prior to the application must be verified, and the current income must be calculated alongside the actual income received over the past 12 months. For self-employment, income from specific limited companies, cash savings, and families subject to the adequate maintenance standard, documentary requirements are specified separately; therefore, this table cannot be applied directly to these cases.
The 31-day and 28-day limits restrict the recency of documents, and the coverage period must still be fully met. Those paid weekly must provide every payslip for the required period; 6 months cannot simply be equated to 6 documents.
When your salary is credited, please verify the net pay amount.
When organizing your documents, reconcile the net pay on each payslip with the corresponding bank deposit amount, date, and payer on a transaction-by-transaction basis. The gross pay is used to calculate income in accordance with the applicable rules; the amount received in the bank is typically the net amount after deductions for taxes, National Insurance, and pension contributions. If salary and expense reimbursements are deposited together or paid in two separate transactions, it is advisable to request that the employer provide a detailed breakdown of the payments and retain all supporting documentation, thereby preventing the adjudicator from having to rely on guesswork based solely on the amounts.
A self-prepared comparison table only helps locate information and cannot replace the employer's payslips or bank statements.
Electronic documents also have authentication requirements.
There is an easily overlooked detail in the Family Route: paragraph 1(a)(v) of the current Immigration Rules Appendix FM-SE requires that electronic bank statements be accompanied by a letter of authenticity on bank letterhead, or stamped by the bank on every page. Simply downloading the statements as a PDF does not satisfy this verification requirement. Payslips are assessed under paragraph 1(bb): they must be formally issued by the employer and bear the employer's name, or be accompanied by a letter of authenticity on employer letterhead signed by a senior official.
These are the specific provisions for the family route; however, the document format for work visa applications must still be verified in accordance with their respective applicable requirements.
Check Completeness and Employer Letter Before Upload
My approach to organizing the documents is to group them by "payslips, corresponding bank statements, and employer letter." The file names should specify the account holder and the period covered, while retaining the account information page, continuous page numbering, and transaction details. After merging the files, reopen them to verify that the amounts are clearly legible and that no pages are missing. For the Family Route, you must also verify the employer letter as stipulated in paragraph 2(b) of the aforementioned Appendix: it must clearly state the employment status and gross annual salary, length of employment, the duration for which this salary level has been maintained, and the type of employment. Even if an employment contract is already provided, this letter must still be verified.
This section deals with financial materials, while other evidence should still be prepared in accordance with the applicable rules and checklist for this application.
Another factor that can reduce the number of attachments is that paragraph 1(aa) of the aforementioned appendix allows eligible letters on bank letterhead to replace bank statements. The letter must include the account number, issuance date, bank name and logo, along with the required transaction and fund information for the specified period, and satisfy requirements such as account ownership. If the bank issues the letter in accordance with the regulations, there is no need to upload the bank statements page by page; the document can be shorter, provided that all the information to be verified is complete.
