Getting the UK visa, what about bringing pets into the country?

JustiScript•13 October 2026•👁️ 707

The UK government's "Pet Travel Guide" requires: "They must be microchipped before they get their rabies vaccination."

I think that when moving pets from the Chinese mainland for the first time, you should first obtain a qualified blood test result, confirm the earliest departure date, and then buy non-refundable air tickets.

First verify the source, then arrange the processing order

This text refers to the standard non-commercial process for cats, dogs, and ferrets entering England, Scotland, and Wales, as verified on October 13, 2026, under the Pet Travel Scheme (Pet Travel Rules); Northern Ireland has separate rules. The conditions apply if there is no sale or transfer of ownership, usually no more than five pets, and the pet arrives within five days of the owner. If someone else is taking the pet, a written authorization is required, and when traveling separately, both parties should keep copies of their itineraries. If these conditions are exceeded, additional import procedures must be verified; breed restrictions for dogs also need to be confirmed in advance. The choice of preparation route depends on whether the origin is within the EU or the UK listed list.

The common starting point is the chip and rabies vaccine: at least 12 weeks old when vaccinated, the chip should be implanted in advance; both can be completed during the same visit, but the chip should be handled first. First vaccinate, then implant the chip, requires re-vaccination.

Departing from the EU or listed countries, first check the vaccine.

Case One: Pets departing directly from the EU or listed countries usually do not require a rabies antibody blood test. After completing the initial vaccination, at least 21 full days must pass; the day after vaccination is counted as day 1, and some vaccines may require a longer period, which should be confirmed by a veterinarian. If the vaccine remains effective and booster shots are administered on time, there is generally no need to wait another 21 days. This waiting period is calculated separately from the window for issuing the health certificate.

No blood test does not mean a universal pet passport. According to the official document list, when departing from the EU, an effective EU pet passport can be used; when departing from listed countries such as Japan, the GB pet health certificate is required.

Departing without a name, need to leave enough for three months

Case 2: According to the current list of approved countries in the UK, mainland China is not included. When bringing pets into the UK for the first time, blood testing should be added to the process: rabies vaccination according to regulations, blood sampling at least 30 days after vaccination, sending the blood sample to an EU-recognized laboratory, and the antibody titer must reach 0.5 IU/ml. After passing the test, the pet must wait for three natural months starting from the blood sampling date before departure. The veterinarian should record the blood sampling date in the travel documents and provide a report. Three natural months start from the blood sampling date , not from the date the report is issued, and it is not advisable to directly book tickets based on 90 days.

The section on "Rabies Blood Test" by the UK government also states: as long as the rabies vaccine remains effective, a qualified blood test can continue to be used; if a booster shot is missed, leading to interruption of protection, re-vaccination, re-testing and waiting are required.

In terms of documentation, this route requires a Great Britain pet health certificate (GB pet health certificate), which must be signed and stamped by an official veterinarian authorized by the local government, with the date noted. The pet must enter within 10 days after the certificate is issued. A regular vaccination record cannot replace it; you can prepare the documents in advance, and leave the appointment for certificate issuance until after your travel plans are confirmed.

If the materials or preparations do not meet the requirements, the pet may be quarantined or returned, and the related costs will be borne by the owner. My suggestion is to list the vaccination, blood collection, earliest departure, document issuance, and estimated arrival dates on the same page, with the veterinarian and carrier separately verifying the sections they are responsible for; also obtain itemized quotes for transportation, customs clearance, and inspection fees, which will help in budget planning.
