ILR: What if I didn't pass the Life in the UK test? Do I have to wait 7 days to retake it?
Life in the UK wasn't passed, does it really require waiting for 7 days before retaking the exam? In the parliamentary written answer Home Office on September 21, 2022, it was stated that seven days is a recommendation to facilitate preparation, and has never been set as a mandatory waiting period. The current UK government's exam guidelines also do not list this waiting requirement.
Can I reschedule now?
You can check the available dates in the official appointment system. According to the current government examination guidelines, regular appointments must be made at least 3 days in advance; the "how far in advance to book" and "how long between two exams" should be considered separately. The specific date you can take the exam also depends on the availability of seats and the selected appointment category. Seven days does not mean that a seat will definitely be available at that time. There is no limit on the number of retakes, and each retake requires re-payment of fees. When arranging the date, you can put your study progress, leave requests, and existing permit expiration dates on the same calendar, leaving room for achieving a passing result and verifying the application documents.
With optional test centers, it's still necessary to determine: whether the knowledge point that caused trouble last time has been addressed this time.
Not passed, will it affect the qualification of ILR?
After passing the re-examination, you can still prepare the application according to your own route; permanent residency also requires meeting other conditions of this route. Here is an easily overlooked detail: Home Office The guidance for the "Knowledge of language and life in the UK" case clearly states that both passed and failed candidates will receive a result email containing the URN. URN is the unique reference number; just seeing "a number in the email" cannot determine whether it is qualified. When saving the results, put the exam date, Pass or Fail status, and the corresponding number together, and use the record of the passed session when filling out the form.
If the retake date is close to the expiration of the current license, the study schedule and identity arrangement should be verified by a licensed lawyer together.
Take a week, how to review specifically?
Below is my one-week review schedule for retakers, with the number of days adjustable according to the foundation level. Day 1: Use a set of practice questions that have not been done before for a diagnostic test, list all the questions that were answered incorrectly or guessed correctly, and mark whether they are due to facts not remembered, incorrect understanding of the English question, or confusion between similar characters and events. Days 2 to 4: Return to the corresponding chapters in the official "Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents" based on the error causes, record the questions, the references, and the other item that is easy to confuse. For historical content, sort the chronological order; for systems and common sense, categorize by themes; after reading, close the book and restate it in your own words, then check against the original text. This way, each round of review has clear goals, and there is no need to copy the familiar chapters from the beginning again.
The government guidelines clearly state that the exam is based solely on the official manual. Practice questions are used to find weak areas; when there are disagreements in explanations, refer back to the manual for confirmation.
Days 5 to 6, switch to different practice papers, and complete the entire set of 24 questions within the official exam's 45 minutes. When seeing familiar options, read the question stem completely, pay attention to the subject being asked, time frame, and negative words; after finishing, add new wrong questions to the original list. On day 7, review the repeatedly incorrect content, check the appointment information and required identification, and arrange the route to the venue. If the same type of error keeps occurring after changing the questions, extend the review period. The "day 7" here is just a node in the study plan, which can be adjusted according to your own progress, and it does not guarantee passing the exam within one week.
Just remembering which letter to choose for a question is hard to deal with different ways of asking; being able to state the manual reference corresponding to the answer is more convenient for checking whether it is mastered.
How proficient should one be before paying to retake the exam?
The official passing score is 75%, which means answering 18 questions correctly out of 24. My judgment is: if you can only barely pass, it's not worth retaking just to get the earliest available seat. I will set my self-assessment goal as answering at least 20 questions correctly in two consecutive different practice sets , and being able to explain the questions that were answered incorrectly or guessed correctly. This standard leaves a little room for error, and is a recommendation for preparation, but cannot guarantee the results of the actual exam.
Find out where the mistake is, and then decide on the day for the next match.
Another fact that makes this preparation more cost-effective: The government guidelines clearly state that those who have already passed this exam do not need to take it again when transitioning from a permanent residency application to a naturalization application. Although you may need to go through the examination room again now, the passing record obtained this time can still be used in the future; after passing the exam, properly keep the result email and the reference number.
