How to apply for BNO UK settlement? 5-year timeline and documents

JustiScript•13 October 2026•👁️ 908

Coming to the point of applying for permanent residency, an applicant named BN(O) mentioned in public feedback that different statements about the old and new forms online had made them worried. Previously, the individual had obtained a visa under BN(O), and now when applying for permanent residency, they still need to confirm the entry point. This experience comes from public client feedback provided by a UK immigration service.

As of October 13, 2026, the standard eligibility period for adult applicants remains five years.

Separate the five-year period from the visa expiration date

The earliest window for the UK government application, as stated in the application instructions, is 28 days before the five-year qualification period ends. When preparing, you can list the start and end dates of each permit and your residence records together, then write down the five-year end date, the earliest submission date, and the current visa expiry date. If you have changed passports or applied for extensions, the relevant decision letters should also be placed on the same timeline. If dates do not match, go back to the original documents for verification. The continuous residence requirement still needs to be met separately; you cannot just rely on the fact that the visa states five years to confirm compliance. If the current visa expires before the earliest submission date, you need to arrange for an extension first, to avoid handling the immigration transition only after five years.

Four groups of materials, each with one use

Here is the sorted order; the actual project upload will be based on my application list.

Material Group Prepare Content
Identity and LicenseCurrent Passport, relevant old passports, previous license decisions; verify name and validity period.
residence records entry and exit dates and passport records; when there is no entry stamp, boarding pass, UK transaction records or employer's certificate can be provided.
Examination and English Life in the UK through recorded, recognized English proof, or applicable exemption documents.
Family and TranslationPrepare birth certificates, parent identities, etc. by category; non-English or Welsh documents are accompanied by certified translation.

Currently, applicants aged 18 to 64 usually need to pass Life in the UK and meet the English speaking and listening level of at least B1 or other recognized proof; prepare the corresponding basis for applicable exemptions. For specific requirements, see Appendix HK 60 and HK 61 of BN(O).

My judgment is that it's not worth delaying the submission just to meet the six-month living expense proof requirement, provided other conditions are met.

Minors and adult dependents have their own additional requirements; family documents cannot be deleted in the same way as for adult partners. When there are members of these two categories, you can mark the application category for each person individually, then determine which documents can be shared and which need to be prepared separately.

Select the ILR entry, then complete verification

On the day of submission, I must be in the UK.

Enter from the "Settle in the UK" page of the UK government's BN(O) visa information, select the Hong Kong British National (Overseas) category, fill in according to the system prompts, pay, and complete the document upload and identity verification. If you meet the mobile verification conditions, scan your passport as instructed; otherwise, book a UKVCAS appointment to collect fingerprints and photos. The form can be saved and filled in later, and check the name and date again before payment.

According to the official statement on the date of this article, the application fee is £3,226 per person, and the permanent residency application does not require payment of IHS; ordinary processing usually makes a decision within six months.

After submission, save a copy of the application form, payment receipt, and upload list, and respond to the supplementary documents according to the notice deadline. The file name can include the applicant's name and coverage date to facilitate distinguishing family members' materials. This is a recommendation for organization, not an additional legal format requirement; after approval, complete the subsequent procedures according to the decision notice.
