Can't work in the UK without NIN? These 3 misunderstandings make Chinese people pay more taxes + their permanent residence records are all wrong
I just got the Skilled Worker visa and am excited to join the job, but HR asks for a National Insurance Number (NIN, National Insurance Number)? I applied for it for two weeks but still haven’t received it. The company said that I can’t pay wages without NIN? What is even more distressing is that some Chinese people were questioned by Home Office about falsifying their work records when applying for permanent residence due to incorrect information.
Today I will tell you everything about NIN: when it is necessary, when it is not necessary, how to apply the fastest, and the 5 pitfalls that Chinese people are most likely to step into.
📋What is NIN? Why is it so important for permanent residence?
The National Insurance Number is a unique identifier used by the British government to record your payment of National Insurance (NI) and taxes. It consists of 2 letters + 6 numbers + 1 letter (such as QQ123456A), which remains unchanged for life.
For Chinese people in the UK, the importance of NIN is not only "used when looking for a job", but more importantly:
- Work certificate for permanent residence application : When applying for ILR, Home Office will check your NI payment record, which is the key evidence to prove that you work legally and meet the salary threshold
- NHS, pension, unemployment benefit : Without NIN record, you may not receive State Pension when you retire in the future
- credit record : NIN is an important part of the credit report, affecting loans and renting.
❌ Myth 1: You cannot work in the UK without NIN
This is the biggest misunderstanding. You can start work without an NIN, as long as you can prove that you have the right to work in the UK (e.g. BRP, visa), you should tell your employer that you have applied for an NIN and provide it to them upon receipt.
real case : Xiao Li started working immediately after getting the Skilled Worker visa, but NIN took 3 weeks to apply. HR asked him to use his passport number to join the company first, and then update the system after NIN arrived. As a result, more taxes were deducted from the first month's salary, and I later went to the payroll department to recover it.
key operations :
- When filling out the Starter Checklist, leave the NIN column blank and give the employer your NIN as soon as possible after joining the job.
- When there is no NIN, the employer will withhold tax at a higher rate. This is only a temporary measure and will be adjusted after receiving NIN.
- Take the initiative to confirm with HR/Payroll: how to make up for the enrollment after NIN arrives, and how to refund the overdeducted tax
⏱️ Apply for NIN: complete process to get it in as soon as 4 weeks
Who can apply?
Must be in the UK, have the right to work, and be working, looking for work or have a job offer. Note: You can only apply after arriving in the UK and cannot apply from overseas.
Application steps (2026 latest)
first step: apply for online
Visit the GOV.UK official website to apply online, and you need to prove your identity. Have one of the following documents ready:
- BRP / eVisa (Some BRP have NIN printed on the back, check first!)
- passport
- British driving license
- Birth or adoption certificate
You can apply without these documents, but you may need to make an appointment for an interview or mail copies of the documents, which will take longer to process.
Step 2: Upload a photo to prove your identity
You can take pictures with your mobile phone, tablet or camera. The system will tell you how to take pictures and requirements. You can ask others to help you take pictures.
Step 3: Wait for NIN to issue
England, Scotland, Wales: up to 4 weeks; Northern Ireland: up to 16 working days. After submission, you will receive a confirmation email containing the application reference number.
time-saving tip : If there is BRP, turn to the back to see if NIN is already printed (Format: AB123456C). Some visa holders have been automatically assigned NIN when they received BRP and do not need to reapply.
🚨 The 5 most common NIN pitfalls for Chinese people
Pitfall 1: Thinking that changing visa/name requires changing NIN
Even if personal information changes (such as changing your surname after getting married, changing your passport, or changing your visa), NIN will remain unchanged for life and there is no need to apply for a new one. But remember to notify HMRC to update your personal information, otherwise tax records may be wrong.
Pitfall 2: Not tracking the entry progress of NIN when joining the company
Some Chinese people forgot to give it to HR after receiving NIN. As a result, after working for half a year, the "temporary tax ID" was still displayed on the payslip, and all NI payment records were missing. When applied for permanent residence, Home Office could not find any work records and was asked to supplement a large amount of supporting documents .
Correct approach to :
- Immediately send an email to HR/Payroll after getting NIN (keep email records)
- Check whether NIN is displayed correctly on next month’s payslip (payslip)
- When you receive P60 (annual payroll tax bill) every year, reconcile the NIN and NI payment amounts
Pitfall 3: The application for NIN has not been processed for more than 4 weeks. I don’t know how to check it.
You can call the National Insurance application hotline: 0800 141 2079 (free), Monday to Friday 8am-5pm. Remember to have your application reference number ready (included in the confirmation email).
Pitfall 4: Failure to keep NIN properly after getting it
NIN will appear on your payslip or P60, or you can check it online through your HMRC personal tax account and download the confirmation letter. To prevent identity fraud, do not share NIN randomly, only give it to organizations that need it (e.g. employer, HMRC, DWP).
Pitfall 5: Self-employed people don’t know how NIN affects tax returns
If you are self-employed, you need to register for Self Assessment before October 5 of the following year after you start self-employment. You must provide a valid NIN when registering. HMRC will not accept registration without NIN. Failure to apply for NIN in time may result in failure to file taxes on time and face penalties.
💡 NIN and permanent residence application: What you need to know
When applying for ILR, Home Office will pass your NIN verification:
- Employment Continuity : Confirm your employment record while in the UK
- salary threshold : Check whether you meet the annual salary requirement for the Skilled Worker permanent residence route (£35,800 in 2026 or the corresponding going rate)
- NI payment record : proves that you are not working illegally and meet visa conditions
If NIN's records are incorrect, missing, or inconsistent with the visa time, may be required to provide additional pay stubs, P60s, employer letters, and may even face the risk of visa rejection .
permanent residence countdown tool : Want to accurately calculate your permanent residence time and departure days? Use the 永居计算器 APP to automatically synchronize your work record timeline, detect blank periods in NIN records in advance, and avoid overturning when applying for permanent residence.
✅ Final Checklist: 3 Things to Do After Applying to NIN
✓ immediately notifies the employer : Send an email to HR/Payroll, attach NIN, and request to update the system
✓ Check next month’s payslip : Confirm that NIN is displayed correctly, and NI deduction is normal
✓ keeps all records : NIN confirmation letter, monthly payslip, annual P60 - may be used when applying for permanent residence
NIN This "little piece of paper" may seem inconspicuous, but it is actually your core document for legally working in the UK, paying taxes, and applying for permanent residence. It’s not difficult to get it, but what the Chinese really need to pay attention to is making it run correctly in the system and not setting up traps for permanent residence.
