ILR What is the Knowledge Test about? Life in the UK Question Types and Passing Scores

JustiScript•28 September 2026•👁️ 852

When sorting historical events, new citizens who have read the manual and passed the test became helpers for their group's locally born British counterparts.

This experience is recorded in the public hearing of the UK House of Lords Judicial and Home Affairs Committee on March 29, 2022. Organizers had local-born citizens and new citizens complete parts of the test content together in Edinburgh and Southampton; the witness mentioned that when arranging historical events, the former relied heavily on those who had read the manual and taken the exam. This activity does not represent all examinees, but it provides a practical reminder for preparation: knowledge from designated textbooks needs to be specially organized, apart from life experience.

People preparing for the Life in the UK test can first confirm three numbers: 24 questions, 45 minutes, and at least 18 correct answers.

The questions are only from the official manual scope.

The rules of the UK government's Life in the UK Test examination guide can be translated into two sentences: answer 24 questions based on the official handbook within 45 minutes; pass if the score is 75% or higher. First, break down "based on the official handbook." The designated textbook is "Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents," covering the values and principles of the UK, the composition of the country, its history, modern society, and the roles of the government, law, and individuals in the community. Basic knowledge about historical events, festival customs, sports culture, parliament, and courts may fall within the scope of review.

The name "Life Knowledge" covers a broader range than daily experiences such as shopping, seeing a doctor, and taking the bus.

Corresponding to review, the table of contents of the manual can be turned into a coverage table. For the historical part, events are connected by periods, avoiding only leaving scattered years; the national component matches geographical names with their corresponding areas; the cultural part classifies festivals, movements, and art forms separately; the government and legal part records "what this institution is responsible for." After finishing each section, close the book and retell the relationships in your own words. If you can recognize the answer but cannot explain why it belongs to this category, you usually need to check back to the original passage. Such notes also make it easy to locate where the wrong questions were missed in which section.

Then disassemble "24 questions". Home Office The trial guidance clearly states: This is a multiple choice (multiple-choice) test on the computer, no need to write an essay or make an oral statement.

title writing what needs to be completed
Single choice Select one from four options
Choose two Choose two from four options
Judge truth Judge whether a statement is correct
Comparative Statement Select the correct one from the two statements

Here it needs to be clarified: "Multiple-choice questions" cannot be uniformly understood as questions where only one answer is selected per question. The official "Official Practice Questions and Answers" lists these formats. Among them, multiple-select questions require both correct options to be selected in order to receive the score for that question. Only identifying one of them cannot be counted as half a question correct. When practicing, it should also be scored as a complete question; selecting two correct options still counts as completing one question. When reading the questions, first confirm how many items need to be selected, then determine the content, which can reduce scoring losses caused by having memorized the knowledge but not following the required answering method.

Another detail that is easy to overlook: the official appointment FAQ clearly states that there will be unscored practice questions at the beginning of the exam, helping candidates become familiar with the question formats and the operating system.

ILR Pass the line by answering 18 questions correctly

The "75% or more" in the rules refers to the score threshold for oneself. According to 24 questions, 24 × 75% = 18, so only needs to answer 18 questions correctly to pass, with a maximum of 6 questions answered incorrectly . Answering 17 questions correctly still does not meet the requirement. There is no need to guess how others performed in the same session: the passing standard has been announced, and there is no requirement to pass based on the ranking in the examination room. When seeing the term "pass rate," it can be distinguished whether it refers to the examination threshold or the actual proportion of candidates who passed in a certain batch; even if the latter changes, it cannot be used to replace one's own passing score.

"45 minutes" is the time limit for answering. When practicing, you need to include both understanding the questions and completing the choices in the timing.

If you usually take notes in Chinese to understand the knowledge points, you still need to go back to the actual language and writing style of the questions as the exam approaches. You can do a complete timed practice session, and then check separately: which questions you really didn't know, which questions you understood the knowledge points but read the scope incorrectly, and which questions you missed the number of choices. When encountering questions with two very similar statements, compare each part carefully, such as characters, locations, events, and modifiers; this is more reliable than just looking for familiar keywords. The purpose of timing is to find out where you need to adjust your reading and operational aspects; the speed of completion itself does not constitute a higher passing standard.

For example, when the question asks about a certain place, organization, or event, "the word seems familiar" and "knowing its relationship with the stem" may differ by a step in answering.

In accordance with the permanent residency rules, for applications applicable to the current "Immigration Rules" Appendix KOL UK, KOL 2.1(a) requires providing an effective digital number to prove passing the recognized Life in the UK test. The regulation does not require a full score. After passing the test, keep the results and corresponding number for accurate filling in the application; other conditions related to the length of residence and the relevant route still need to be met separately. Arranging the documents in this way can also separate the records of "the test has been passed" and "the entire permanent residency application is eligible," avoiding misjudging the submission timing by completing only one of them.

My judgment is: preparation should complete a full coverage of the official manual, then use questions to check weak areas; repeatedly memorizing a set of fixed answers is not suitable as the main method.

You can keep a very short record of wrong questions, just writing "knowledge point, manual location, where was the mistake this time". If the knowledge was not remembered, then supplement the corresponding section; if names were confused, write down similar concepts side by side clearly; if you missed the requirement for multiple choices, add checking the question instructions to the practice steps. The review order is determined by this record, and the chapters that have been understood can be appropriately reduced in repetition, leaving time for the parts that have not been covered or keep making mistakes. This is a suggestion for study methods, not an official new requirement, and there is no need to buy a complex set of learning tools just to adopt it.

It has been talking about reading questions all along, and the exam hall also provides another aid.

Official appointment Q&A instructions, the system can adjust font size and background color, and provides headphones to listen to the audio of the questions. This arrangement may be very useful for those who have difficulty with screen readers or find it easier to read and listen simultaneously; if you have additional examination arrangement needs, you can raise them when making the appointment. Apart from preparing knowledge, understanding the appropriate way to answer questions in advance can also help you perform better with the content you have already learned.
