After waiting for five years, I finally qualified to submit an application for British permanent residence (ILR). When I saw the bill - it had gone up again. From April 8, 2026, the new Home Office fee schedule will take effect. The permanent residence application fee will increase from £3,029 to £3,226, which will cost an extra £197 per person. If a family of four applies at the same time, the application fee alone will be close to £13,000. Today I will break this account apart and calculate it for you.

UK permanent residence ILR application fee 2026: increased to £3226

This is the adjustment that most directly affects the Chinese in the UK. Regardless of whether you take the Skilled Worker, Spouse, Global Talent or 10-year Long Residence path, the single ILR application fee is now uniformly £3,226, charged on a per capita basis, and each accompanying dependent (dependant) must pay separately.

The increase this time is about 6%-7%, which is part of Home Office’s comprehensive general survey and is not specifically targeted at permanent residence. The cost of naturalization has also risen to £1,709 during the same period. In reverse good news: the child citizenship registration fee has been reduced from £1,214 to £1,000.

IHS medical surcharge: no need to pay for permanent residence

What many people are most anxious about is actually IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge). Here is some reassurance: has not increased by in this round of adjustment to IHS. It still maintains the level of £1,035 per year for adults and £776 per year for students/minors/youth exchange visas.

Key point: Applying for ILR (permanent residence) itself does not need to pay IHS for . IHS is prepaid based on the duration of the visa, and you have paid it in one lump sum when renewing your visa in previous years. Obtaining permanent residence means getting rid of the burden of thousands of pounds a year - this is one of the most tangible rewards of ILR.

In other words, IHS’s pain was suffered in the years before permanent residence. A person who has taken the Skilled Worker path for 5 years may have paid more than £5,000 in IHS in the past few years. This is why "relocating permanently one day sooner" is not just psychological comfort, but real money.

Is the permanent residence accelerated channel Super Priority still worth it?

The official processing time limit for standard ILR applications is up to 6 months . If you don’t want to wait, you can add money to buy acceleration:

· Priority Service: The results will be available in
in about 5 working days. · Super Priority Service: The results will be available in the next working day after submission. There is a surcharge of about £1,000 (the specific amount is subject to the latest announcement of GOV.UK).

The acceleration fee is in addition to £3,226. Whether you want to buy it or not depends on your actual needs: if you are waiting to use your permanent residence status to change jobs, travel abroad to visit relatives, or apply for subsequent naturalization, it is time-sensitive and worth it; if you just want peace of mind and are not in a hurry, the standard channel is completely sufficient, and the money saved is not a fraction.

How to calculate the total cost of permanent residence: Don’t just focus on the application fee

What really determines whether you can successfully obtain permanent residence is never money, but these hard conditions:

continuous residence : Under the 5-year path, the total number of days out of the country in any 12 months must not exceed 180 days. If you exceed one day, you may be rejected and all your efforts will be wasted;
Life in the UK Test: a hard test for most paths;
English proficiency : usually need to reach the B1 level.

Every year, some people fall into the trap of 180 days - they take an extra long vacation, return home to deal with urgent matters, and their residence clock is interrupted. The number of days you have to leave the country must be counted to the fullest, don’t rely on your feelings. If you are not sure about your window period, you can use 永居计算器APP for actuarial calculation, or you can add our licensed lawyer on WeChat to confirm.

If these three things are met, £3,226 will be spent meaningfully. It is normal for fees to rise every year. Instead of worrying about the increase of several hundred pounds, it is better to clear the minefields such as exit records and examinations that will make you wait five years in vain.
