UK Visa: How to Get a Work Visa for a Football Star?

Short-term 70 points, long-term 80 points.

This is the hard threshold of the current Immigration Rules Appendix International Sportsperson. Football stars coming to play for a UK club usually take the International Sportsperson visa. Transfer fee, reputation, and contract can only indicate that the club wants to sign a player. To truly obtain the right to work, they need to first get the Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) from the Football Association, then the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) issued by the club, and finally have the visa approved by Home Office.

The 70 points for the UK visa are all essential.

The application is not more than 12 months, 70 points consist of: GBE accounts for 50 points, CoS accounts for 10 points, and financial requirements account for 10 points. For applications longer than 12 months, speaking and listening skills must reach CEFR A1 level to obtain 10 English points, totaling 80 points. There is no room for additional advantages to compensate, and missing any mandatory item will affect the application.

An individual usually needs to prove that they have held at least £1,270 for a continuous period of 28 days, with the 28th day falling within 31 days before the application date; this personal deposit proof can be waived if they have held a valid visa in the UK for 12 months, or if an A-grade sponsor confirms on CoS that they will cover the first month's living expenses. CoS can only be used once and must be used for the application within three months of issuance.

Fame must first pass GBE

足总文件有一行很容易被忽略：球员可以先完成俱乐部注册，但在取得GBE、由该俱乐部分配CoS并获批International Sportsperson permission之前，连训练、友谊赛等受雇活动也不能参加。我的判断很明确：跨境转会应把GBE可行性放在签约前核验，不能留到官宣后的行政流程里处理。

一年以内和长期路线差很远

Staying for no more than 12 months, the current application fee is £340 per person; for stays longer than 12 months, applying from outside the UK is £819, and renewing or changing within the UK is £943. Applicants and their accompanying family members usually have to pay an Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year. Long-term visas are valid for up to three years and can be renewed as long as the eligibility is maintained.

Changing clubs is not just about changing the jersey and labor contract. The new club usually needs to reprocess GBE, allocate CoS, and complete the change of employment application; existing permits will not automatically cover the new employer. For the player's team, medical examination, financial proof, family documents, and visa processing time should be scheduled in reverse with the registration window.

ILR Plan from day one for five years

International Sportsperson can lead to Settlement. The main applicant usually needs to complete five years of continuous residence, during which they can combine the routes listed in the Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Innovator Founder, Scale-up, etc., and meet the absence requirements in Appendix Continuous Residence. Within the five years, there must be at least one approval of an International Sportsperson visa lasting more than 12 months. Therefore, "a short-term visa cannot count towards ILR at all" is too absolute: short-term visas may be included in the five-year combination, but the applicant must have held a visa under this route for more than 12 months within those five years.

The permanent residency stage also requires passing Life in the UK Test. According to the current rules as of September 9, 2026, the English proficiency requirement for applications submitted before March 26, 2027, is B1; applications submitted on or after that date will be raised to B2, except for those who qualify for exemptions. Overseas trips due to competitions, training sessions, and national team tasks should be recorded on a daily basis and cannot be supplemented after the five-year period has ended.

The value on the field cannot shorten the immigration process; when approaching the transfer window or the expiration date of ILR, each permit and entry-exit record must be reserved for verification.
