Which is faster and more cost-effective, a ten-year residency or a five-year work permit?
A permanent residency budget table, with the left column indicating ten years of long-term residence, and the right column indicating five years of work permit; leave three rows below: application date, current permit expiration date, and remaining fees to be paid. When comparing different routes, these three rows can be placed on the same page. This calculation is based on a single adult main applicant, with family budget listed separately.
1|Calculate how much time is left first
According to the current rules verifiable as of October 14, 2026, the qualifying period for Long Residence (ten-year continuous residence) is ten years, while the permanent residency qualifying period for Skilled Worker (skilled worker) is five years, which is accumulated through designated pathways. Here, we are comparing how much time remains from today. For example, a person who has accumulated nine years of eligibility for long-term residency and only two years for the work permit qualification, the remaining time would be approximately one year and three years respectively; another person has accumulated seven years of long-term residency and four years of work permit eligibility, so the work permit eligibility is closer. Both examples assume continuous residence and other requirements are met, but the actual date when applications can be submitted must be determined according to the rules, and the arrival anniversary date cannot be directly taken as the payment date.
There is a review period between reaching the deadline and obtaining approval; neither route can be calculated solely based on the age label to determine the approval date.
2|ILR official fees are the same, the difference is in the renewal
The standard application fee for a permanent residency application in the Home Office charge table starting from April 8, 2026, is £3,226, and both routes apply the same standard; no IHS (immigration health surcharge) is required for applying for permanent residency. The budget is affected by whether to renew the visa before meeting the requirements. According to the official "Skilled Worker Visa: Fees," the renewal fee for a standard domestic work visa for up to three years is £943, and IHS is usually £1,035 per year. If IHS is charged for the full three years, the total is £4,048, with separate calculations for discount or exemption categories.
This £4,048 is just an example of a renewal budget, excluding the settlement fee afterwards; future applications must be recalculated according to the rate at that time.
3 | Changed Visa, Looking Back at These Twelve Months
"Appendix Long Residence" of the Immigration Rules, LR 11.3 to 11.4 requires that, on the day of application, you are usually required to have been in the current immigration route for a full twelve months; exceptions set out in the provisions apply if the current permission was approved before April 11, 2024. Home Office, the long residence guidance updated on October 8, 2026, further explains that the same route can be accumulated across different batches of permissions. This step is easy to miss: the starting point is different between just switching to a work permit and renewing within a work permit. Having been continuously in the same route for a full year, and having just had the renewal approved does not therefore reset the waiting period for another year.
If the ten-year period is completed first, and the current route has not yet reached twelve months with no exceptions, the long-term stay date on the budget table needs to be postponed.
4|Meeting both criteria, I tend to avoid revisiting old records
My judgment is that when both requirements are fully met and the employer's proof is complete, priority should be given to the five-year work visa application. The reason is specific: the official fee is the same, but the period of continuous residence to be verified is shorter. According to the current "Immigration Rules", Appendix SW 22.1 of the work visa covers the specified five years of continuous residence; while long-term residency covers the entire ten years under LR 12.1. This affects which old passports, travel records, and permit documents need to be organized, saving preparation time, but cannot guarantee faster processing. The work visa application still requires the employer to confirm that they will need your job in the foreseeable future, and meet the applicable wage requirements, according to SW 24.1 to 24.3; long-term residency does not have this set of employer sponsorship and job wage conditions.
If the long-term residency has already met the requirements and the work permit still needs to be renewed, paying one less renewal fee would have practical value; if the salary or employer's proof is still pending confirmation, the verification of long-term residency qualification should be moved to the front. Only the plan that can be legally submitted can enter the cost comparison.

5 | After completing these three items, determine the application route
- List the submission dates and the expiration dates of the existing permits for both routes, and mark the date when the current immigration route reaches twelve months.
- List the budget according to the actual number of renewals required for each plan, and fill in the application fee and IHS respectively; separate the costs borne by the unit from the individual budget, and list the already paid and non-refundable amounts as historical expenses, to avoid mixing with future new expenses.
- Check the residential evidence for the selected route, the applicable English and life knowledge requirements, confirm the application form and submit it.
