How to book the exam? Life in the UK £50 registration and nearest test center
£50, which is the standard registration fee for this exam.
As of September 21, 2026, the UK government's exam guide still lists this price. My judgment is: when you are well-prepared and have enough time, it is advisable to book a nearby regular test center first; when special periods can save more leave or transportation costs, paying extra fees would have practical value.
£50 registration starts from the official entry point
The reservation entry is "Start now" on the UK government exam introduction page.
Search for the page name "Life in the UK Test" to locate it. After entering, register an exam account for yourself, prepare an email address that can receive messages, a debit card or credit card, address and ZIP code, and complete the identity verification according to the instructions. Those with eVisa should use the share code (identity sharing code); when generating, select "to prove your immigration status for anything else" (to prove your immigration status for other purposes) according to the current UKVI "Identification requirements". If you don't have eVisa or cannot access it, you can use official recognized documents such as a valid passport. The name must be exactly the same as the one used in the identity document for registration. Before payment, check the spelling, date of birth, and document information. If you registered with a passport, bring the same original valid passport on the day of the exam.
Those who have verified their identity through eVisa do not need to present physical ID documents separately; for those who registered with a passport, copies cannot replace the original.
After selecting the test center, date, and time, confirm the fee details and make the payment. Standard appointments must be scheduled at least 3 days in advance according to government guidelines; the official system also lists nearby test slots that may incur additional fees, and whether they are open depends on the page. After payment, check the confirmation information, save the complete address of the test center, the exam period, and check-in requirements to your calendar; each family member must register individually and cannot share a test slot.
Select the nearest test center, including the travel distance together
The UK has more than 30 test centers, and the actual available locations and seats are subject to the scheduling system.
After filling in the address and postal code, compare the available dates at the test centers listed in the system, and then check the door-to-door route. I will prioritize locations with fewer transfers and that allow me to arrive comfortably, and then compare the total cost. The location that is closest on the map may not be more convenient if it requires multiple transfers; it might be less convenient than a slightly farther test center with direct access. If there are no suitable time slots nearby, you can compare other locations or dates available in the system, and then decide whether to pay for a special time slot.
£50 corresponds to the standard exam fee, with additional charges for certain periods.
The "Optional Services" column of the official appointment system's FAQ states: a fee of £25 is charged for booking an exam within 24 to 72 hours; an additional £25 is usually charged for exams on Sundays. Both are optional services. A detail that is easy to miss is that if a Sunday session also falls within the nearby booking range, only one fee will be charged, either £25 or £30 depending on the category, and the fees for Sunday and nearby booking will not be combined.
When the total exceeds £50, you can first expand the additional items and then compare the regular sessions.
Families with children need to consider the childcare arrangements: The government's exam guide clearly states that children and other family members cannot accompany candidates into the test center. Candidates who require a wheelchair ramp, additional equipment, or other assistance can request special arrangements when making their appointment. Such needs should be confirmed before payment, as merely checking the proximity of the address might overlook the actual conditions that could affect whether they can smoothly participate on the day of the exam.
After selecting the test center, the arrival instructions in the confirmation letter still need to be verified separately. The duration of the exam does not include the entire travel time.
There is a 72-hour deadline for rescheduling after payment.
After the exam slot is confirmed, there is still room for adjustment in the schedule. The UK government's refund policy states that if you cancel at least 3 days (72 hours) in advance, you can get a refund of £50 for the registration fee, which will be returned to the original payment card. Go to "Confirmed tests" and select "Cancel tests" to perform the action; if you only want to change the date or time, the official booking system allows free adjustments at least 72 hours in advance.
This line is calculated by hour, including weekends.
Late arrival, bringing the wrong identification document, or being unable to attend due to illness does not entitle one to a refund; if the test is canceled by the test center, a refund can be applied for according to the official procedure. When arranging your schedule on the day of the exam, please also reserve time for identity verification and on-site photo taking. The exam itself is 45 minutes long, with 24 questions, and a passing score of 75% is required; after passing, save the unique reference number (unique number), which will be needed when filling out the permanent residency application.

When rescheduling, handle it within the range of more than 72 hours before the exam to avoid having to pay again due to crossing the deadline.
