The English requirement for permanent residence in the UK will be upgraded to B2 in 2027. Does Life in the UK need to be retaken?

JustiScript17 August 2026👁️ 421

Last week, a reader sent a message saying that she would only be five years old in 2028. When she saw the news that "English is to be upgraded," she ordered a bunch of IELTS textbooks that night and studied the questions until two o'clock.

She asked me: "Is the B1 test I took before invalid? Do I need to retake Life in the UK?"

These two questions have been received every day in the background recently. Today I will use an article to explain them clearly - which ones have really changed and which ones have not changed a word.

What happened to the English requirements for permanent residence in the UK? B1 to B2

On March 5, 2026, the Ministry of Interior submitted a Statement of Changes (No. HCWS1379) to Parliament, which raised the English threshold for permanent residence in most paths from B1 to B2. The assessment dimensions are still speaking and listening.

The key is the effective date: March 26, 2027 . In other words, your permanent residence application submitted before will still be reviewed as B1; only the application submitted on or after will need B2.

B1 is roughly equivalent to GCSE level and B2 is close to a foreign language A-level. It is generally estimated in the industry that it takes about 200 hours of systematic learning to climb from B1 to B2 - this is not a gap that can be made up by studying questions for two weeks.

It covers a wide range of applications: main applicants for work-based pathways, family-based pathways (including spouse visas), 10-year private life pathways, and adult dependents are all included.

Also, don’t get confused: starting from January 8, 2026 , the English threshold for the entry/application stage of these three types of visas: Skilled Worker, Scale-up, and High Potential Individual is already B2. That's the "come in" threshold, March 2027 is the "stay" threshold, two things.

Have the Life in the UK exam rules changed? The answer is no

This round of reform has not touched Life in the UK Test at all. The rule remains:

📝 24 multiple-choice questions, 45 minutes, 18 correct answers (75%); the official fee is £50, and you need to make a reservation on the GOV.UK official website at least 3 days in advance; the teaching material is the official third edition of "Guide for New Residents".

The most reassuring point: after passing , there is no need to retake . The same Unique Reference Number can be used for permanent residence and can be used later when applying for naturalization. Therefore, friends who have already taken the exam do not need to enter the exam room again because of this new English rule.

A reminder: There are many third-party websites online that charge £75 or £80 to "order" for you. In fact, the official channel is £50. Just search GOV.UK's life-in-the-uk-test page.

British permanent residence English and examination, who can be exempted from the examination?

The list of exemptions will remain basically the same after this reform:

· 65 years old and above - English and Life in the UK are both exempt, automatically applied, calculated based on age at the time of application, no additional materials required
· children under 18 years old
· Nationals of countries where English is the main language (such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, etc.)
· Holding a British degree (or Ecctis An overseas degree certified to be equivalent to a British degree and the teaching language is English)
·Long-term physical and mental health conditions making it impossible to take exams or prepare for exams

The last one is the most misunderstood. It is not automatically valid, and a letter of explanation from a doctor must be submitted; and minor discomfort, temporary illness, and simple "test anxiety" are usually not accepted. The rejection rate for this item has always been high. It is best to let a professional take a look before preparing the materials. How long until the B2 deadline? Three things to do now

Counting from today (August 17, 2026), there are still approximately 7 months until March 26, 2027.

First, figure out your submission window. If your 5-year period expires before March 26, 2027, and all conditions are met, then prepare according to B1 and strive to submit within the window. You can use the 永居计算器 APP to calculate the number of consecutive days of permanent residence and the 180-day departure red line. Don’t estimate based on your feelings.

Second, if the window is after March 2027, start practicing now. 200 hours spread over 7 months, less than 7 hours a week, completely controllable. Moreover, the test is about speaking and listening, not writing and reading - finding a language partner, listening to podcasts, and taking speaking classes are much more effective than brushing up on grammar books.

Third, dig out the old transcript to check. English must take SELT recognized by UKVI and take the test at designated test centers. If you have met the corresponding level in your previous visa application, you can usually continue to use it, but the specific list shall be subject to the approved test list of GOV.UK - the list will be updated, so be sure to confirm that the institution you selected is still registered before taking the test.

There is another variable: the reform of the British permanent residence "Earned Settlement"

The Home Office's public consultation on "Earned Settlement" ended on February 12, 2026. According to the Home Secretary's public statement, about 130,000 responses were received - a number that itself shows how much everyone cares.

The consultation document mentioned ideas such as extending the standard qualification period from 5 years to 10 years and adjusting the years based on contribution. However, as of today, formal immigration rules and transitional arrangements have not been announced yet. Therefore, any statement on the Internet that "it will definitely change in 10 years" is only an interpretation at the proposal level.

In the face of uncertain policies, the most stable strategy is always to complete the parts that you can control first - language, examinations, length of stay, and non-stop work. No matter how the rules are changed, these four things are bonus points.

💬 I would like to ask everyone: , is your permanent residence application window before March 26, 2027, or after? If you do it later, how do you plan to push English from B1 to B2—enroll in a class, find a language partner, or study on your own? Let’s chat in the comments section, maybe we can find each other some company.
