British permanent residence transfer to naturalization: ILR for 12 months + 4 major conditions and £1839 fee

Many people have worked hard to settle in the UK for (ILR/Indefinite Leave to Remain) and , thinking that the end is here. In fact, for many Chinese families, the real end point is the dark red passport - British Citizenship (). The question is: After obtaining permanent residence, how long do you have to wait, how much does it cost, and what conditions are met before you can submit a naturalization application? How many months do you have to wait to transfer from permanent residence in the UK to naturalization?

This is the most frequently asked question. The rules are actually very clear: after obtaining ILR (or EU Settled Status), you usually need to live in for another 12 months before you can submit an application for naturalization.

In other words, most people who take the 5-year work permit/skilled work permit path have "5 years to get permanent residence + 1 year to wait = they can apply for naturalization in the 6th year." During this year, you must be in "free status", which means you are no longer subject to visa time restrictions.

⚡Exception: If your spouse (spouse/civil partner) is already a British citizen, you can apply for naturalization on the same day you get ILR. does not need to wait for 12 months for . This is one of the great perks of the Spouse Path.

4 hard conditions for British naturalization

Meeting the waiting period is only the first step. When submitting Form AN, you must also meet the following four items:

① Number of days of residence and departure : The absence from the country does not exceed 90 days in the 12 months before application ; the total absence from the country in the past 5 years does not exceed 450 days. This period is more stringent than the permanent residence stage (180 days/year), and many people fail here.

② Life in the UK Test: Must have passed (fee £50). If you have already passed the test when applying for permanent residence, you can use the same score for naturalization without having to retake the test.

③ English proficiency : Currently required to reach B1 level. But note - in the solicitation for opinions on the "earned settlement" reform in 2026, it has been proposed to raise the threshold to B2. Please refer to the GOV.UK announcement for the specific time when it will take effect.

④ Good Character (good conduct) : This is the most subjective level and the easiest level to overturn. The Ministry of the Interior will review your criminal record, tax and financial integrity, whether your past visa applications are truthful, whether you have worked illegally or overstayed, etc. Even an unpaid fine or an omission in tax filing may be grounds for visa rejection.

From 2026 April 8th , the total adult naturalization fee is £1,839, consisting of two parts:

• Application fee £1,709　• Naturalization oath ceremony fee £130
