How to apply for BNO UK settlement? 5-year timeline and documents
Coming to the permanent residency application form, an applicant BN(O) mentioned in public feedback that different statements about the old and new forms online had made them worried. Previously, the individual had obtained a visa BN(O), and now applying for permanent residency still requires confirming the entry point. This experience comes from public client feedback published by a UK immigration service.
As of October 13, 2026, the standard eligibility period for adult applicants remains five years.
Separate the five-year period from the visa expiration.
The earliest window provided in the UK government's application instructions is 28 days before the five-year eligibility period ends. When preparing, you can list the start and end dates of each permit and residence records together, then write down the five-year end date, the earliest submission date, and the current visa expiry date. If you have changed passports or applied for extensions, related decision letters should also be placed on the same timeline. If dates do not match, go back to the original documents for verification. The continuous residence requirement still needs to be met separately; it cannot be confirmed just because the visa states five years. If the current visa expires before the earliest submission date, you need to arrange an extension first to avoid handling the immigration transition only after five years.
Four groups of materials, each with one use
Here is the sorted order, the actual project upload is based on my application list.
| Material Group | Prepare Content |
|---|---|
Applicants aged 18 to 64 usually need to pass Life in the UK and meet the English speaking and listening level of at least B1 or other recognized proof; prepare the corresponding basis for applicable exemptions. For specific requirements, see Appendix HK 60 and HK 61 of BN(O).
My judgment is: when other conditions are met, it is not worth delaying the submission just to meet the six-month living expense proof.
The current "Immigration Rules" Appendix Hong Kong British National (Overseas) permanent residency provisions HK 55 to 64 do not have separate income or deposit thresholds. The financial requirements for the first entry are different from the documents used to prove residence for permanent residency; bank statements can demonstrate a record of living in the UK, and when uploading them, the purpose should be explained according to the application requirements.
Adult family members can be arranged separately.
Home Office 2026-10-08, Edition 15 BN(O) Route Guidance specifies in the section on relationship requirements for adult applicants: those who are 18 years or older at the time of application and whose most recent visa is not an Adult Dependent Relative (ADR) do not need to apply simultaneously with the principal applicant, nor do they need to wait for the other party to apply for permanent residency first. At this stage, partners do not need to prove that their relationship is still ongoing. This regulation affects the processing times for families: eligible adults can proceed independently, but their own eligibility period, English language requirements, and other conditions must still be met individually.
Each family member still needs to submit an application individually.
Minors and adult dependents have their own additional requirements; family documents cannot be deleted in the same way as for adult partners. When there are members of these two categories, you can mark the application category for each person individually, then decide which documents can be shared and which need to be prepared separately.
Select the ILR entry, then complete verification
On the day of submission, I must be in the UK.
Enter from the "Settle in the UK" page of the UK government's BN(O) visa instructions, select the Hong Kong British National (Overseas) category, fill in according to the system prompts, pay, and complete the submission of documents and identity verification. Those who meet the mobile verification conditions should scan their passport as instructed; otherwise, arrange a UKVCAS appointment to collect fingerprints and photos. The form can be saved and filled out later, and check the name and date again before payment.
According to the official statement on the date of this article, the application fee is £3,226 per person, and the permanent residency application does not require payment of IHS; ordinary processing usually makes a decision within six months.
Submit a copy of the application form, payment receipt, and upload list, and respond to the supplementary documents according to the notice period. The file name can include the applicant's name and the coverage date, which is convenient for distinguishing the materials of family members. This is a sorting suggestion, not an additional legal format requirement; after approval, complete the subsequent operations according to the decision notice.
