How is the 180-day stay abroad calculated? Passport stamps, flight tickets, and eVisa records

Every time it's near the submission deadline, someone comes with a worn-out old passport to count the pages. After counting, they still ask: "When I left last time, there was no stamp, so can I skip reporting?"

My judgment is straightforward: the passport stamp is no longer sufficient for the number of days you left the UK, relying on it to backtrack is a complete waste of time. What can really save you is a daily ledger you've kept since the day you arrived. The following three questions are the most frequently asked in recent years.

Would the Ministry of the Interior not be able to check if there is no exit stamp on the passport?

It can be checked. Since April 8, 2015, exit checks have been restored at airports and ports in the UK, and the document information of departing passengers is reported by airlines, shipping companies, and railway operators to the Home Office before their journey. The absence of a stamp on the passport does not mean that there is no record of that trip in the system.

But this data set has had a loophole since its design, which few have noticed: the routes within the Common Travel Area (between the UK and Ireland, and the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands) are not subject to exit checks, and the carriers of these journeys do not need to collect passenger document data. This is clearly stated in the Exit checks fact sheet of GOV.UK and in the inspection report published by the Independent Inspector in 2018. In the immigration rules, Ireland is considered outside the UK, so a flight to Dublin for three days still counts as a full day's absence. These short trips are precisely the ones that are most likely to disappear from your list without a trace.

Don't take "not found in official records" as "no need to declare". The application form requires you to truthfully list each period of absence. Omitting information, if discovered, is a matter of integrity, and the consequences are much more severe than declaring a few extra days.

The 180 days of permanent residency, which 12 months is it calculated from?

The most widely circulated method of counting is "no more than 180 days per visa year," while some people divide it by the calendar year. Absences starting after April 11, 2024, no longer apply to this method. Appendix Continuous Residence CR 2.2 uses the wording any 12 month period, and the accompanying case guidance is implemented on a rolling basis: any day can be chosen as the starting point, and the 12-month period following that day must be valid.

Take a calculable example. Return to China for 55 days in November 2025, 60 days in March 2026, and 80 days in September 2026. Looking by natural years, 55 days in 2025 and 140 days in 2026, both are safe. However, if the window is set from November 1, 2025, to October 31, 2026, the total is 195 days, which exceeds the limit by 15 days. The same vacation period may fall into several windows, which is the easiest part to miss when calculating yourself.

Do a reverse calculation before booking the ticket: how many days are there in total when you go back to the UK, pushing forward 12 months from that day.

What exactly should be kept as a voucher?

Starting from April 10, 2026, the EU EES will be fully operational, and Schengen border authorities will stop stamping passports. Plus, the UK has never stamped departure, and those who can use eGate upon entry also don't get a stamp, so the information available on the passport line will only decrease. GOV.UK's "Guide to faster travel through the UK border" clearly states: without an entry stamp, you need to keep your ticket and boarding pass to prove your entry date. As for eVisa, the UKVI account shows your current status and validity period, not your travel history.

Source Record What Can Prove Blind Spot
Passport stamp Partial entry date No exit stamp in the UK; Schengen does not stamp from April 10, 2026
Air Ticket and Boarding Pass Departure and Arrival Date, Flight Number Changes and Missed Flights should be based on the actual travel records
Carrier data submission Entry and exit records on the Ministry of Internal Affairs side Round-trip to Ireland and other CTA routes are not within the scope
eVisa/UKVI Account Current Identity and Validity Period Do not output any entry and exit travel records

There are only two steps in the process. On the day of arrival, record two lines in your phone calendar: the departure date and the return to the UK date, each with the flight number, and take a screenshot of the boarding pass and save it in the same album; once a year, do a rolling check and add up the number of days in the past 12 months. Especially for those few times when you go to Ireland by land or take the Eurostar, you need to enter them yourself, as no one else will do it for you. "The applicant must not have been outside the UK for more than 180 days in any 12 month period."
—— Immigration Rules, Appendix Continuous Residence CR 2.2

any 12-month period, this wording does not have a starting point, so there is no day that is naturally safe; your records must be able to withstand any window for counting.
