After being laid off from a work visa, I suggest immediately initiating the new sponsorship and application preparation, and not taking the receipt of a 60-day notice as the starting point for job hunting.
60 days from which notice?
This article discusses the situation where a person in the UK with a Skilled Worker (Skilled Worker Visa) is normally laid off. Home Office will consider canceling or shortening the permit; usually, 60 calendar days will be retained to apply for a new residence permit or arrange departure. This period is related to the delivery of the formal cancellation decision. The layoff notice, end of employment contract, and employer's report of termination of sponsorship cannot directly be considered as the same starting date. In practice, the submission should be arranged according to the expiration date clearly stated in the formal decision, and the original permit's expiration date should be verified. For cases involving other cancellation reasons such as serious violations, the time arrangement for ordinary layoffs cannot be directly applied.
The original visa will not be extended for 60 days: when the remaining validity of the original permit is less than 60 days, it is usually still subject to the original expiration date.
Home Office According to the guidelines C1.13, C1.15, suspension of guarantees and related changes usually need to be reported within 10 working days. This is the submission deadline for the employer. Confirming with HR the actual termination date and the submitted content can help verify subsequent letters, and you cannot add an extra 10 days of stay based on this. The guideline C1.17 also requires the employer to provide the address and personal contact information they have retained, which should be verified during the handover, helping to avoid notices being sent to the old address.
The deadline may be running when the email is sent.
Paper letters, emails, and service when the person cannot be reached may correspond to different time records.
Home Office Supplementary Guidance for Cancellation of Authorization, Section 2.4 clearly states that email delivery is calculated based on the sending date; the date the email was opened will not automatically replace the sending date. For paper letters sent to addresses in the UK, the mailing arrangement for delivery will be taken into account when calculating the new expiration date, and the email algorithm cannot be directly copied. After receiving the notice, save the effective date in the main text, the letter record, and the attachment together, then verify with the original visa expiration date; if there are conflicting dates, please have a licensed lawyer verify as soon as possible, and it is safer to prepare according to the earlier date.
If the party has not received it in person, it cannot be presumed that the time period has not yet started: when the conditions are met, Home Office may use file delivery, and the time shall be calculated from the date of such delivery.
After the job offer, you still need to complete the application.
The actual time that needs to be reversed is the time when the application is completed. The UK government's guidance on changing employers requires that the new position meets the relevant conditions and has a new CoS (sponsorship certificate). Interviews, verbal offers, and offer letters will not automatically extend the visa. When communicating with the employer, I recommend directly confirming who is responsible for the sponsorship, when the CoS can be issued, the job code, and whether the salary supports the application, leaving room for document review and payment. If the employer is still applying for a sponsor license, separate the license processing, CoS issuance, and individual application, so you can clearly see which step still has uncertainties. This way, you can determine whether a job offer can be finalized within the current timeframe, avoiding filling all available time with interviews without leaving a window for submission.
If a qualified domestic application is submitted before the current permit expires, and a decision has not been made by the expiration date, the Immigration Act 1971 section 3C may extend the original permit while the application is being considered.
The dates for family members also need to be verified separately. If the spouse and children hold dependent permits, Home Office are usually also considered for cancellation accordingly, and are usually set to expire on the same day as the main applicant; family members need to handle their new applications separately. If the new sponsorship cannot be completed in time, other domestic routes that have already met the requirements can be assessed simultaneously, or arrangements for departure on schedule can be made. Simply having interview progress, a recruiter's commitment, or an explanatory email will not automatically extend the period. For special considerations such as medical needs, evidence should be submitted as early as possible, and the relevant authorities will decide whether to grant leniency.

Complete four things in this order
- Obtain the layoff notice and employment termination confirmation from the HR department, and verify the reporting situation of the guarantee termination.
- Check the personal contact information in the UKVI records, check for spam and whether the representative who still represents you has received the mail, and put the notice together with the original license expiration date in the same calendar.
- Confirm with the new employer the issuance arrangement and job conditions of CoS, and reserve time for application preparation.
- Check the family's consent for each person; if there is no plan that can be submitted on time, implement the arrangement for departure before the deadline, and file the relevant notice, submission proof or departure records in the same folder.
