How Long Does ILR Approval Take? How to Choose Between Standard and Expedited Processing

JustiScript

A permanent residency application record typically includes an online submission confirmation, proof of payment, an identity verification appointment, and a notice of decision. Laying these documents out together clearly shows the stages of submission, verification, and awaiting the decision.

1. ILR standard processing, allow six months

As of October 17, 2026, the UKVI Settlement Service Standards stipulate a standard processing time of six months for common in-country settlement routes, including work visas, ten-year long residence, and family routes. The standard process involves submitting the application and paying the fee online, providing supporting documents and completing identity verification, awaiting the review, and receiving the decision. UKVI's in-country processing guidance states that enrolling biometrics in person, or completing identity verification via the designated app and submitting the application and documents, marks the starting point for processing. The six-month timeframe is a service standard; individual cases may be completed sooner, or take longer if additional documents are requested or further checks are required. When planning work and family commitments, this timeframe should not be relied upon as a guaranteed decision date.

2. Expedited service has two tiers; first, verify the available options.

Expedited slots are limited, and available tiers depend on the application route and identity verification method; options not provided by the system cannot be booked under the configuration of other routes.

Service Extra Charge Time Basis
Standard processing No expedited processing surcharge Typically six months
Priority
Priority Processing
£500 The two official pages state 5 and 30 working days respectively, see below
Super Priority
Super Priority Processing
£1,000 Usually the next working day, weekend appointments are charged separately

The £500 tier requires an additional step of verification: the UK government's general priority service guidance states that Settlement usually takes 30 working days, whereas the in-country eligibility table still lists some indefinite leave to remain categories under the 5-working-day column, creating a discrepancy between the two texts. Therefore, neither figure can be confirmed as the standard processing time for all ILR applications. Before making the payment, please verify the service name, processing time, and conditions for when the timeframe begins on the application page for this specific application, and save the relevant guidance; if anything remains unclear, you may contact UKVI for confirmation. Travel arrangements should not be finalized based on the shorter processing time.

3. The decision is made the following day, and the calculation shall start from the verification stage.

According to the Super Priority Service guidance, following an in-person appointment on a working day, a decision is typically provided by the end of the next working day; for appointments on weekends or bank holidays, it usually takes two working days.

"The next business day" does not mean 24 consecutive hours after payment. To give a scheduling example: if on-site verification is completed on a Friday and there are no bank holidays, the target is usually by the end of the following Monday; if verification is done on a Saturday, it is typically by the end of the following Tuesday. The waiting time prior to the appointment must also be factored in separately. My assessment is that individuals with a fixed deadline should first confirm the earliest possible date for completing identity verification before determining their budget for expedited services. If the appointment itself is already scheduled after the deadline, paying extra fees cannot make up for the prior waiting time, and the relevant arrangements will need to be adjusted accordingly.

4. After submitting supplementary documents, retain the submission records.

Expedited applications may still be subject to requests for additional documents or cross-departmental verification. Home Office will specify the required documents and the submission deadline; upon receipt of the supplementary documents, the application will continue to receive priority processing.

When checking the progress, you can consolidate the application number, verification date, request for supplementary documents, and proof of submission into a single record, and also check your spam folder. The official guidelines for expedited processing do not guarantee a uniform new decision date for all supplementary document submissions; therefore, on the day you submit the supplementary documents, it is not advisable to independently restart a definitive countdown. A verifiable submission record is far more useful for follow-up inquiries than trying to estimate "which day it should be your turn."

5. Beyond the time limit, refunds are subject to separate evaluation.

If the applicable processing time has been exceeded and you have not received an explanation for the delay, you may contact UKVI to make an inquiry, providing your timeline and application reference number.

An easily overlooked detail can be found in the "Do Not Cancel Request" section of the official premium processing refund page: if the process is delayed because Home Office requires additional information or evidence, the premium processing fee will not be refunded; however, if a decision is not made on time due to reasons beyond its control, such as technical issues, a refund may be granted, handled on a case-by-case basis. The refund outcomes for these two scenarios differ, and merely citing that "the deadline has passed" is insufficient to determine the result. Retaining your proof of payment and delay notifications will not only facilitate tracking the progress but also help substantiate the grounds for your refund request.

Even expedited deadlines are subject to review exceptions; it is advisable to build in a buffer for arrangements that cannot be rescheduled.
